Sr. Program Director of Extended Season-Full Time-Overnight Camp Job at YMCA triangle
POSITION SUMMARY:
In cooperation with other staff from Camp Sea Gull and Camp Seafarer – the Senior Program Director of Extended Season is accountable for developing and implementing all programs (land, sea, and various other Family and association programs) for Camp Sea Gull and Seafarer during the Extended Season. In addition, the Senior Program Director will share responsibilities for program recruitment, new business, budget planning, staff supervision, risk management, financial development, and property management, especially as related to designated areas of supervision. Lastly, the Senior Program Director holds primary decision making for extended season camp operations and programs in the absence of the Shared Services Executive Director.
The Senior Program Director will be responsible for leading such functions in accordance with the stated mission, goals and policies established by the Board of Directors, governing committees and administrative staff of the YMCA of the Triangle Area.
This position will require that the incumbent live on site at Camp when delivering programs in direct service (accommodations provided).
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Develops and delivers the overall ultimate aim and strategic priorities that position the Sea Gull and Seafarer Extended Season programs as a leading player in developing young people into leaders for life with self-confidence, resilience and character, with an emphasis on seamanship, skill development, freedom of choice, and excellence.
- Administers all on-site Sea Gull and Seafarer extended season programs, including the implementation, supervision, evaluation and constant strengthening of all extended season programs and program standards and, in conjunction with the Sea Gull and Seafarer Senior Program Directors.
- In collaboration with Camp Sea Gull and Seafarer Senior Program Directors, is responsible for developing program standards for all programs and for the staff training, implementation and oversight necessary to assure that all programs are delivered with the same integrity and high standards as other similar Sea Gull and Seafarer programs.
- In conjunction with the Executive Director(s), ensures that all programs are safe and that Extended Season programs comply with Association standards of risk management and all appropriate industry regulations and best practices.
- Holds final responsibility for camp operations and program in the absence of the Executive Director of Shared Services, including authority for crisis management and major problem solving as needed.
- Develops and maintains collaborative relationships with like-minded and mission aligned organizations, including but not limited to American Camping Association, US Sailing, US Tennis Association, Alpine Towers International, etc. to ensure program innovation and relevance across all seasons with attention given to business development in the Extended Season.
- Accountable for the development, planning and administration of Specialty Programs, Association Programs/Initiatives for the Extended Season including the adherence to program standards and management of the key vendor relationships necessary for those programs.
- Supervises the Director of Community Programs, giving high-level leadership, vision, strategy, and support to the development of our community relationships and programs. Helps to strengthen our position as a member of Pamlico and Craven Counties, as well as surrounding areas.
- During the extended seasons, supervises the Program Directors for Camp Sea Gull and Camp Seafarer to coordinate the program training, delivery, and maintenance across all seasons.
- In coordination with the Director of Marketing and Communication for overnight camps, develops and manages the material, timing, and strategy for Extended Season programs marketing to help ensure their sustainability, relevance, and effectiveness.
- In coordination with the Directors of Staffing, Leadership Development, and Program for both Sea Gull and Seafarer as well as the Director of Community Programs, provides high level support and vision for the hiring processes and recruitment of staff across multiple dimensions of diversity for the extended season program staff, including involvement in their onboarding and staff training.
- Accountable for the training and supervision of all extended season program staff; ensures participants receive superior customer service, adhere to safety standards and have a fun and meaningful experience. This includes managing and tracking certifications required for program staff and offering certification courses for staff in coordination with summer program and staffing directors.
- Develops and manages the program budget in a manner that aligns with the strategic direction of the Extended Season , including budget planning and development, delivering programs as efficiently as possible and within budget, ensuring good stewardship in regards to the available fiscal resources.
- Accountable for the purchase, care, maintenance and storage of program equipment for all seasons, ensuring that each activity is adequately equipped to deliver the programs safely within operating procedures and as designed. This includes Sea Gull and Seafarer activity site prep and shut down for all seasons.
- Supports summer programs as needed.
- Leads or participates in YMCA of the Triangle Association assigned teams as needed to ensure camp representation and alignment of the Extended Season to Association best practices, guidelines, and policies to advance the efforts of both camp and the Association.
- Serves as a member of the Shared Services Director Team, providing high-level leadership, vision, support, and professionalism for all full time, part time, and seasonal staff and ensuring the delivery of a superior, positive and safe camp experience to all program participants. Models relationship-building skills in all interactions. Maintains regular, clear, and concise communication within area of responsibility.
- Provides leadership to the broader camp community by serving as a Camp Advisory Board liaison or tactical team chair, or an active participant to those and other work groups as required.
- Represents Camp Sea Gull and Camp Seafarer during camp travel and promotional efforts, including but not limited to camp nights, program related travel, conferences, etc.).
- Takes a leadership role in the Camp Annual Campaign effort by recruiting a team of volunteers across multiple dimensions of diversity and securing personal gifts to help reach the overall goal and participates in the Relationship Management process to identify, cultivate and steward donor prospects in support of the strategic direction of the Development Department.
- Execute other duties and responsibilities assigned by Executive Director or required by all full-time staff of the YMCA and the Camps.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree in related field, with five to seven years of relevant experience in areas such as youth outdoor adventure programming, programming with children and adults, working with families, schools, businesses and community groups.
- Prior experience and involvement at Camp Seafarer as well as a thorough understanding of Seafarer culture and programs, particularly seamanship, is definitely an asset.
- Must possess or gain knowledge of American Camp Association accreditation standards as they relate to the participant experience.
- Must possess or be willing and able to attain certifications including, but not limited to, Merchant Mariner Credential, US Sailing and Powerboating Instructor Certifications, Lifeguard Certification, Association for Challenge Course Technology Certifications, CPR, AED, O2, and First Aid.
- Exceptional personal relationship skills and organizational and leadership skills.
- Strong and consistent time management and problem solving skills.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
- Multi-lingual desired but not required.
