The laboratory of Dr. Donna Farber in the Department of Microbiology & Immunology at Columbia University Medical Center is seeking a Staff Associate I to support investigations into human tissue immunity. The Staff Associate I will be co-supervised by Dr. Peter Szabo in the Department of Microbiology & Immunology and will aid in performing biological assays using primary immune cells obtained from human tissues. The candidate will join a diverse team of enthusiastic and collaborative researchers to support the core mission of understanding how innate and adaptive immune cells form and function across the human body.

Primary responsibilities will include but are not limited to the following:

  • Working with a team of researchers to isolate immune cells from human organ tissues for immunological studies. The candidate will be trained in a set of tissue-specific protocols and will be required to work alongside team members during tissue acquisition.
  • Assisting in the execution of complex immunological assays, including flow cytometry, magnetic cell purification & cell sorting, immune cell stimulation in tissue culture, and population level or single cell genomics. The candidate will be trained in established protocols to execute assays independently and under supervision.
  • Aiding in basic laboratory tasks, including cleaning, upkeep, and reagent ordering.

Position Breakdown:

  • Functional Knowledge (50%): Assist with experimental design and execution of primary immune cell isolation from human tissues. Executing assays for immune cells (phenotyping, cell isolation, genomics) and data analysis.
  • Problem-Solving (15%): Analytical skills to solve moderately complex biological problems based on established guidelines and protocols.
  • Decision Making/Autonomy (15%): Works within established standard operating procedures and established protocols to execute immune assays. Works with subject matter experts to refine experimental design details and analyze data.
  • Technical Expertise (10%): Ability to operate and maintain equipment, instruments, and software relevant to the project.
  • Communication Skills (10%): Ability to record, share and confirm information accurately. Daily-to-weekly communication with supervisors and collaborators.
  • Leadership: No supervisory responsibilities.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $57,000.00 - $70,000.00 per year
