Days/Hours:
Monday – Friday 9:00a.m. – 6:00p.m. Position requires employee to have scheduling flexibility as needed to support the team and meet the needs of this agency.
Qualifications and Skills:
- Juris Doctorate from a nationally accredited U.S. law school.
- Member of the Florida Bar in Good Standing with no prior disciplinary proceedings that resulted in the imposition of a penalty or suspension.
- A minimum of 2 years litigation experience in Family Law, with a focus on time-sharing and dissolution proceedings. Experience representing or working with survivors of domestic, dating and sexual violence or stalking is preferred.
- Must understand the sensitivity of working with domestic violence survivors as well as the unique circumstances surrounding safety of staff and survivors while in public settings.
- Must possess highly developed interpersonal skills, as well as critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and must be able to make appropriate decisions relating to providing effective legal representation with minimal supervision.
- Excellent computer skills including competency in Microsoft Office and electronic legal research via LexisNexis. Ability to learn and become proficient in using legal case management software.
- Must have experience filing documents via FL E-portal.
- Bilingual or Multi-lingual preferred including Creole, Spanish and Portuguese.
- Valid Florida’s driver’s license with safe driving record. Proof of automobile liability insurance.
Workplace Location(s): Downtown Fort Lauderdale and various satellite locations as needed. Regular travel to Broward County Courthouse will be required.
Position Summary:
The IFP Project Attorney shall: 1) meet with survivors to provide legal advice to determine whether the attorney can assume representation of the survivor in a Family matter that arises from or is associated with the filing of an Injunction for Protection matter; 2) when the survivor is eligible, the attorney will represent the survivor in matters regarding paternity, time-sharing and dissolution of marriage; 3) The attorney will represent survivors in all aspects of their related Family Law matters, including participation in final and interim hearings, participation in depositions and other discovery, motion practice, case-related mediation and any other case-related tasks necessary for representing the survivor; 4) where applicable, the attorney will provide legal advice to determine if seeking an injunction is a safe and appropriate legal remedy; 5) complete and file petitions for injunctions for survivors and represent survivors at the final injunction hearing; 6) represent survivors who have a final injunction for protection at an order to show cause civil hearing for a violation of the injunction, or refer the violations to an advocate with the Office of the State Attorney for prosecution; 7) defend survivors against injunctions for protection filed by perpetrators; 8) defend survivors against a motion to dismiss the injunction; 9) represent survivors in a motion to modify or extend a final injunction; 10) represent survivors at continued injunction hearings for the court to determine child support, alimony, time-sharing and other ancillary relief requested in an injunction petition; and 11) represent survivors in court-ordered mediation to address ancillary issues in the injunction such as child support and time-sharing.
Essential Job Functions:
- The IFP Staff Attorney will provide direct legal representation to survivors of domestic, dating and sexual violence and stalking in their related Family Law matters and, where applicable, in temporary and final injunction for protection proceedings.
- Assess additional needs of survivors and make appropriate referrals for additional services with other community-based organizations.
- The IFP Project Attorney will conduct outreach in the Provider’s service area to develop new or renew existing collaborative partnerships with entities such as law enforcement agencies, state attorneys, agencies working with LGBTQ, immigrant, elder communities and persons with disabilities, health care providers, and faith-based organizations to develop survivor referral protocols and to offer additional venues for the IFP Project Attorney(s) to meet with survivors who are seeking injunctions for protection.
- Timely complete monthly and quarterly reports as required to monitor completion of project deliverables.
- Attend quarterly conference calls, IFP Project Statewide training events/ conferences, Learning Exchanges, and participate in technical on-site visits.
Additional requirements: Employee will be required to take the Department of Children and Families (DCF) Core Competency training and obtain a passing grade of 75% or higher.

Pay: $60,000.00 - $65,000.00 per year
