Halff Associates is seeking a 0-5 year highly motivated environmental professional with a Bachelor of Science in geology, chemistry, environmental science, or related degree for hire in our Richardson office. This position would be part of a very skilled team that works closely with Project Managers and other Technical Leads performing due diligence, remediation, compliance, permitting, and other environmental sampling activities. This entry level position will be responsible for conducting Phase I Environmental Site Assessments, Site Investigations, asbestos inspections/surveys, compliance inspections/sampling, preparing reports, and overall support of the environmental department with potential for growth into a project leadership role. This position will include opportunities for both field and office work. It may also involve extensive travel and several days in the field away from home.
Staff Geologist Responsibilities & Duties:
Provide technical support on environmental projects. Project types will include but are not limited to:
  • Conducting field investigations/assessments and collecting project related data for analysis.
  • Preparing environmental reports and studies (e.g., Phase I, Phase II, and Asbestos Inspection reports).
  • Conduct field work including various multimedia sampling (surface water, sediment, soil, groundwater, soil gas, air, etc.).
  • Preparing Regulatory submissions.
  • Conduct aquifer testing, water level measurements, and elevation surveying.
  • Support and conduct indoor and outdoor air quality assessments.
  • Conducting assessments for hazardous materials including (but not limited to) asbestos, mold, lead, PCBs, and mercury.
  • Reviewing and validation of laboratory analytical data, using federal or state guidelines for insertion into technical reports.
  • Data interpretation and presentation including tables and GIS figures to illustrate collected data.
  • Writing technical reports that summarize field events, laboratory analytical methods, data results, conclusions, and recommendations.
  • Scheduling and oversight of utility locating, geophysical survey, excavation, driller, and construction subcontractors.
  • Responsible for client communication on project deliverables and scope development.
  • Responsible for both field and office execution of environmental projects.
  • Field work in potentially remote areas for extended periods including overnight travel is expected for this position. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather.
  • Travel will be required, up to 50% annually (travel throughout Texas and surrounding states).
  • Ability to lift and move items and equipment up to 50 lbs.
Staff Geologist Qualifications:
  • Zero to five years of experience in the environmental consulting industry is preferred.
  • Working knowledge of field documentation and sampling techniques, equipment maintenance or repair, or other activities.
  • Experience conducting work under the regulatory authority of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Texas Commission on Environmental Quality Texas Risk Reduction Program, Railroad Commission of Texas, Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality, Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality, and Oklahoma Corporation Commission is a plus.
  • GIS experience a plus.
  • Chemist with a background performing environmental testing is preferred.
  • OSHA 40-hour HAZWOPER certification is a plus.
  • Willingness to travel and possess a valid driver’s license in good standing.
  • Candidate will be required to pass a background check in order to enter Federal Facilities.
  • Willingness to obtain certifications and participate in training activities as needed to support the team.
  • Qualified applicants who are offered a position must pass a pre-employment substance abuse test and a company physical exam (indicating that there will be no restrictions for field activities or use of a half-face respirator).
  • This position will require field work and travel, as well as early start times and occasional night or weekend work.
  • May require some extended travel (more than 7 consecutive days).
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to clearly communicate both verbal and written technical information.
  • Demonstrated ability to interface effectively and collaborate with clients, peers, management, and vendors to successfully meet shifting needs.
Staff Geologist Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in geology, chemistry, environmental sciences, engineering, or related field of study from an accredited university.
  • For recent college graduates, an internship or cooperative education experience with an environmental consulting firm is preferred.
