As part of the UVM Strategic Communications team, execute the external communications and event coordination for the Food Systems Research Center (FSRC). Ensure continuity and synergy with the overall UVM communications and marketing strategy. Oversee and provide leadership in two core areas: 1. Building a brand and facilitating multimedia, digital services, social media for the Center, and 2. Planning, coordinating and implementing national, regional, and local events in support of the brand related to food systems research and stakeholder engagement.
As a member of the growing Food Systems Research Center, based within the UVM College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, the Strategic Communications Manager will have an exceptional opportunity to lead innovation and transformation as the Center grows in size, visibility and national preeminence. Core responsibilities of this position include: 1. Brand development in coordination with UVM Strategic Communications; 2. Develop and implement a communications plan that aligns with the Center’s strategic priorities; 3. Construct necessary internal and external communications infrastructure to support Center initiatives, such as listservs, email and newsletters; 4. Develop and implement national and regional events for food systems research to anchor the FSRC as a leading innovator and key player for food systems research. The Communications lead will liaise with the central communications department, a network of unit-level UVM communicators, and the US Department of Agriculture Agricultural Research Service (ARS), interface with stakeholders including policymakers, support development efforts for the FSRC, and engage with faculty, staff and students within and beyond UVM to further food systems research and communication.

Minimum Qualifications (or equivalent combination of education and experience)
Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, journalism, digital media, or related field. At least two to four years’ experience in communications and/or marketing roles. Demonstrated professional competency in at least three of these six areas:
  • Writing/editing
  • Event planning
  • Social media
  • Web publishing
  • Photography/videography
  • Desktop publishing
Superb written and oral communications skills. Public speaking and presentation skills. Ability to complete projects within established deadlines. Ability to work independently and as a team member.

Desirable Qualifications
Experience in higher education, corporate communications, agency, non profit or other decentralized, complex organization. Experience or interest in food systems, agriculture, nutrition, science and related fields. Demonstrated commitment to diversity, social justice, and fostering a collaborative multicultural environment. Strategic thinker, planner and facilitator. Experience communicating to internal and remote audiences, using multiple types of channels and mediums. Demonstrated experience working both in teams and autonomously. Social media, design and media relations. Great interpersonal skills with the ability to interact effectively with all levels of management as well as with people from a variety of backgrounds. Outstanding organizational and project management skills with superior attention to detail.

Other Information
Occasional evening/weekend hours required.
Local, regional, and sometimes national business travel will be expected

Special Conditions
Bargaining unit position, External candidates must complete a 4-month probationary period, A probationary period may be required for current UVM employees, This position is eligible for a hybrid schedule with an option to split time between campus and elsewhere, in accordance with the university telecommuting policy
