The full salary range for this position is $55,100 to $93,500/yr. The budgeted salary range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $55,100 - $60,000/yr.

Brief Summary of Job Duties

The Academic Advisor has expert knowledge in current university and college degree requirements, and in college policy, procedures and precedents related to undergraduate matters. Contributes to design, implementation and evaluation of revisions in university or college policy or procedure. Analyzes and acts independently on petitions for exceptions to college and university policy. Uses knowledge to advise students in developing educational plans that will help identify and achieve life and career goals. Supervises students in academic difficulty and develops appropriate action plans. Acts as Dean's representative to assigned academic departments and, in that role, advises departments on changes and additions to courses and academic requirements for majors. Provides support and training to departmental undergraduate advisers. Advises College of Letters and Science Faculty Executive Committee on departmental revisions to majors and courses. Also responsible for various programs and implementation of academic policy as assigned. Manages all social media publishing and practices for Academic Advising social media platforms: Instagram and Facebook. Manages Divisional website and all aspects of our content management systems.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in related area or equivalent experience and/or training.
  • Demonstrated experience working with a diverse student population.
  • Knowledge of multiple majors, colleges, and schools.
  • Thorough knowledge of college / school policies, procedures, and requirements.
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of student development theory.
  • Strong abilities in judgment, decision-making, problem-solving, and project management.
  • Strong abilities in reasoning, problem identification, and development of creative solutions to complex problems.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to multitask, work under pressure, and adjust priorities when dealing with competing and complex tasks.
  • Excellent verbal and writing skills.
  • Demonstrated computer proficiency using standard office and educational applications.
  • Strong computer skills and the ability to learn new software/social media programs as needed.
  • Thorough knowledge of content management systems and/or relevant web applications used for web production and organization-specific computer application programs.
  • 1-3 years in a higher education administrative, student services, or academic role.
  • 1-3 years in academic advising in higher education program/college/or school.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in Counseling, Education, Higher Education Administration or in the Humanities, Arts, or Sciences with advising experience.
  • 1-3 years in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with peers, faculty, students, administration and other interested parties.
  • 1-3 years in interpreting academic policy and procedures compiling and analyzing student academic information and records. work experience using banner student information system.
  • Less than 1 year - Demonstrated skills in computer applications for CMS (Content Management System).

Job Functions/Percentage of Time/Duties

  • 75% ACADEMIC ADVISING - Serves as expert in current University and college degree requirements, and in college policy, procedures and precedents related to undergraduate matters. Significantly guides and assists students in developing suitable educational plans consistent with personal goals and college policies. Helps students clarify life, educational, and career goals by exploring motivation, stage of development, and interests in individual, phone and group advising sessions. Aid in the selection of appropriate courses and other educational opportunities. Evaluate student progress toward established academic and life goals; aid in development of advisee decision-making skills and reinforcement of student self-direction. Consult with students with urgent issues or problems, including students in personal and/or emotional distress and make referrals to appropriate campus support agencies. Review records of students who have fallen into academic difficulty, suggesting corrective action. Help students set corrective academic goals that are specific, measurable, and realistic. Assist students in identifying potential sources of support on campus. Monitor students on academic contracts. Explain conditions and stipulations of contract and approve proposed course schedule. At the end of each quarter, evaluate contracts and make specific decisions such as dismissal, continuation, or continuation on contract. Take action on appeals for reinstatement and readmission, as well as decisions on dismissal of current students. Decide whether and under what circumstances to approve reinstatement, and confirming academic dismissal where appropriate. Where appropriate, help students consider alternative educational options. Independently analyze and render decisions on petitions for exceptions to college and university policies. Act as Dean's representative to assigned academic departments. Advise College of Letters and Science Faculty Executive Committee on departmental revisions to majors and courses. Provide regular correspondence with students, staff, and faculty detailing and clarifying college and university policy. Attendance at regular staff meetings, policy meetings, and professional development activities.

  • 20% WEB CONTENT & SOCIAL MEDIA - Serves as the office lead and expert in areas of marketing, outreach, and communications. Creates and implements the integration of the Letters and Science Academic Advising brand and ensures compliance with any relevant University policy and/or campus practice. Oversees the integrated design, content and functionality of the Academic Advising website; updates content regularly; collaborate with website designer and programmer; Designs and implements an office-wide plan for use of social media to achieve Academic Advising goals. Maintains Social Media pages, refreshing the looks, branding images and marketing content (program-related posts and news) as required. Collaborates with the appropriate university offices and committees. Stays abreast of changing practices in marketing and implements practices as appropriate.

  • 5% SPECIAL RESPONSIBILITIES - All College Academic Advisors are engaged in special advising responsibilities, which may include one or more of the following examples: Design of publicity for college needs; supervision of students pursuing double majors, second degrees, high units; coordination of college publications; liaison with Orientation Programs; implementing programs to aid retention of students who have not met academic standards for degree requirements, transition programming, and other responsibilities determined to be an advising priority by the Dean of Undergraduate Education.
