Applicants must possess a basic knowledge of recreational activities and have the enthusiasm, patience, desire and leadership skills to supervise and guide participants throughout the program. Applicant will work closely with the Recreation Supervisor in collaborating, constructing, implementing, and overseeing innovative programs for participants of the program.


PIEDMONT RECREATION DEPARTMENT CLASSIFICATIONS

Recreation Leader I ($17-$18): Equivalent of completion of the 12th grade or GED and one year volunteer/working experience in a childcare or recreation program. Completion of coursework in education, child development, or a related field is preferred.

Recreation Leader II / Preschool Aide ($18-$20) Equivalent to completion of two years college and three years volunteer or paid work experience working in a childcare or recreation program. Completion of coursework in education, child development, or a related field is preferred.

Recreation Leader III ($20-$30) Equivalent to the completion of 4 years of college, and 5 years of volunteer/working experience in a childcare or recreation program. Completion of coursework in education, child development or in a related field is preferred. Very specialized experience in a Recreation program.

Minimum Requirements

  • 18+ Years of Age
  • 6+ semester units (or equivalent) in Early Childhood Education OR 120 hours verifiable commensurate experience
  • 2 years of work/volunteer experience working in a recreation program or childcare setting
  • Ability to supervise groups of youth participating in recreational programs
  • Ability to work off-hours, shifts or special events, as required
  • Strength to lift and carry materials weighing up to 20 pounds
  • Ability to work outdoors in a variety of weather and temperature conditions

Successful candidates must pass a Department of Justice live fingerprint scan, background and reference checks, a physical and drug/alcohol screening, and Tuberculosis screening prior to start of employment. Must be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 to ensure staff and campers are as safe and healthy as possible and to comply with enhanced health and safety protocols.


Examples of Duties*

  • Activity Planning: Assists in the development, implementation, and scheduling of play-based recreational activities, field trips, guest speakers and special events for specified PRD Programs.
  • Daily preparation of camp activities and rotations including camp-style games and songs, sports, drama, music, movement, science, nature, and crafts for groups of up to 40 campers.
  • Assist Camp Directors in planning, organizing, directing, and scheduling the work of assigned staff; ensures and maintains appropriate staff-to-child ratios in compliance with state regulations
  • Training and setup days: Participate in mandatory staff training and setup days prior to camp start.
  • Staff meetings: During regular work hours, before the start of or debrief after camp hours
  • Contribute to and participate in daily set up/break down of camp space, camp activities, check-in and check-out procedures, and snack & lunch supervision
  • Encouraging and supporting Recreation Aides and Counselors in Training (CITs)
  • Ensures the health and safety of children and staff at all times; maintains a safe, clean, organized environment and provides leadership and PRD camp spirit to all campers
  • Provides technical assistance to staff; assists in developing discipline and camp management techniques.
  • Assists in preparing estimates of supplies and equipment; orders, purchases and/or obtains supplies and equipment to maintain an adequate inventory for program needs.
  • Sets up and uses a variety of recreational, educational, cleaning, and other equipment related to the program as well as standard office equipment, including computers.
  • Instructs children in the safe use of supplies and equipment.
  • Assists in administrative filing and tracking of camp paperwork.
  • Performs other duties as assigned


Hours per Week:
Part-Time, 20-25 hours

Pay: $17.00-$30.00 per hour

Both the staff training and the onboarding session are mandatory for new hires.

Onboarding: Will take place at the Piedmont Recreation Department (358 Hillside Avenue) in the 2nd floor classroom from 4:30 PM - 6:30 PM. New employees are expected to stay for the duration of onboarding. Below are a list of onboarding session dates:

  • Friday, March 3rd
  • Friday, March 31st
  • Friday, April 21st (Make-Up Date)

Mandatory Staff Training: Saturday, June 3, 2023 from 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM at Hampton Park (401 Hampton Road, Piedmont, CA 94611)
