Position: Summer Reading Specialist
Location: Admin Office; Travel to all Clubs
Position Status: Part Time, Seasonal
Reports to: Chief Operating Officer
Compensation Type: Bi-weekly installments
Salary Range: $7,500/Summer

Position Summary:
The Summer Reading Specialist will design and oversee reading activities for Club members ages 6-9 at 6 Boys & Girls Clubs, help collect assessment data for members, collaborate in planning with Club staff, assist in evaluation of program effectiveness, travel with volunteers, kids, and staff to field trip locations, and will supervise Summer Reading Teachers. The Summer Reading Specialist will conduct curriculum planning and staff hiring from March-June. The Summer Reading Program runs for the 9 weeks of summer from June-August.

Position Description:

  • Develop a program theme and design summer reading curriculum for age groups 6-9
  • Recruit, hire and train Summer Reading Teachers for 6 Club locations
  • Manage, coach, schedule and provide feedback to Summer Reaching Teachers
  • Provide differentiated opportunities for students to access the material
  • Plan, organize and attend field trips and engage students in meaningful learning experiences
  • Support and supervise Summer Reading Teachers to ensure classroom control, effective implementation of the Summer Reading Program curriculum, and proper youth development and engagement
  • Provide shadowing and co-teaching with Summer Reading Teachers across all 6 Clubs
  • Schedule and coordinate Summer Reading Programs with Club management at the participating Clubs
  • Assess and report student performance in accordance with policies developed for the Summer Reading Program
  • Assist in upholding and enforcing program, Club and BGCCVA rules
  • Treat and respond to all students with dignity and respect
  • Gather data and key metrics to support the successful and timely completion of grant reporting in line with grant requirements
  • Work to establish and maintain effective communication with students, parents, and Club colleagues concerning both the academic and behavioral progress of students
  • Collaborate professionally with others in assessing and improving the program as well as maintain cooperative professional relationships with others
  • Assign volunteers to engage in meaningful activities with students
  • Maintain records as outlined by administrative regulations
  • Create and supports opportunities, systems, and expectations that promote an organizational culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Create, foster, and maintain a respectful and inclusive environment for all people
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Familiarity in effective reading practices required
  • Reading instruction experience with youth ages 6-9 years old
  • Experiencing managing others
  • Strong communication skills both orally and written
  • Demonstrated ability to work with young people, parents, and community members
  • Ability to supervise a minimum of 15 youth members and maintain safe environments for youth required
  • Experience directing large groups of youth in organized activities preferred
  • Ability to motivate youth and staff in a consistent and constructive manner while maintaining a positive environment
  • Ability to pass a criminal background check required
  • Ability to acquire CPR and First Aid certification required

Education and Certifications:

  • College degree required
  • Teaching certificate required
  • CPR and First Aid certification preferred
  • Valid Driver’s license required
  • Must be able to pass a multi-point background check

Physical Requirements and Work Conditions:

  • Ability to stand for long periods of time
  • Exposure to indoor and outdoor work environments
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs
  • Ability to be effective in an environment with varying levels of noise throughout the day
  • Ability to maintain both visual and auditory supervision of youth members
