Healthcare Staffing Professionals is seeking a Supervising Community Health Worker.

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (LACDPH) is currently expanding outreach efforts by implementing a Public Health AmeriCorps program. This expansion will allow LACDPH to further reach communities highly impacted by COVID-19 including communities with higher COVID-19 case rates and low vaccination rates. The AmeriCorps program will focus on community outreach, health education, and resource sharing in the most highly impacted communities. Program activities will be carried out by AmeriCorps members who will be onboarded and integrated into the existing outreach teams.

Supervising Community Health Workers (SCHWs) will be recruited to supervise and mentor Public Health AmeriCorps Members. SCHWs will be recruited from peer disciplines and will have experience overseeing outreach efforts or programs that support communities disproportionally impacted by public health issues. SCHWs will be trained on AmeriCorps principles and protocols to ensure compliance with program requirements. SCHWs will report updates and progress to the Project Manager.

The Supervising Community Health Worker will provide support and supervision to a team of 10 to15 AmeriCorps Members.

The SCHW reports to the Project Manager for professional oversight and direction.

Pay Rate:

$25.96/hr

Duties can include but are not limited to:

  • Participate in the development, implementation and evaluation of the AmeriCorps program;
  • Supervise a team of 10 to 15 part-time AmeriCorps members within assigned Service Planning Area(s);
  • Provide at-least two hours a week of one-on-one time with each Ameri-Corps Member to discuss outreach and education experiences, professional development, documentation, data collection, and assignment challenges;
  • Assign outreach tasks to AmeriCorps Members in an equitable and strategic manner;
  • Communicate to team members any changes in COVID-19 messaging, guidance, protocols, etc. to ensure they are providing up to date information to communities and businesses;
  • Check in with AmeriCorps team in group and individual settings to relay updates and provide guidance on project best practices;
  • Arrange mentorship and peer learning opportunities for Members;
  • Assure Members are following all scripts, policies, and procedures provided by DPH;
  • Facilitate team meetings;
  • Manage data tracking and ensure tracker submissions are accurate and entered in a timely manner;
  • Assist with tailoring of COVID-19 outreach materials to be more user-friendly, and where possible, culturally and linguistically accessible;
  • Track hours worked by each Member to ensure compliance with training and outreach proportions;
  • Complete member performance evaluations;
  • Attend supervisor meetings;
  • Adhere to trainings including quarterly refresher courses;
  • Assess non-human resources, equipment needs, materials, translation, and training needs for effective COVID-19 community education and outreach efforts;
  • Communicate questions, concerns, and/or feedback to the Project Manager as needed;
  • Offer feedback course correction as needed;
  • Comply with DPH training regarding confidential information related to personal information;
  • Develop a variety of reports and correspondence related to the program;
  • Accept responsibility for other duties, as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Option I: Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university -AND- two years of experience developing, implementing and evaluating a health-focused program with one year at a supervisory level
  • Option II: Three years of experience at the level of Senior Community Health Worker or similar experience at a public or private community-based organization, clinic, hospital or health system.
  • Option III: Five years of experience at the level of a Community Health Worker at a public or private community-based organization, clinic, hospital, public health organization or health system.
  • A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Professional understanding of general health disparities and unique impact of COVID-19 on communities of color, low-income communities, and other highly impacted communities throughout LAC.
  • Ability (including reliable transportation) to conduct field supervision in the community a minimum of four days per week or as needed.
  • Demonstrate the ability to effectively and professionally manage a team of staff during a time of crisis.
  • Experience counseling team members on resources available to manage emotional and mental stress.
  • Ability to address any elevated concerns or answer complex questions staff may have regarding COVID-19 messaging.
  • Ability to maintain a professional, positive attitude and work ethic.
  • Excellent critical thinking and judgment skills.
  • Possess proficiency with computers and software programs.
  • Windows-based laptop or desktop device with a speaker and microphone.
  • Reliable Wi-Fi/internet access.
