- The Enrollment Center of Excellence which supports both Unum US (UUS) and CLA and focuses on providing the two companies with a commonly managed, highly competitive, and consumer friendly suite of enrollment solutions based on existing and emerging needs in the market.
- Leading Colonial Life corporate development activities in partnership with the Unum Group strategy and corporate development team.

- Strategy and direction for all Colonial Life’s Field Development – agent recruiting, agent development, sales training, and incentive and conferences.
This role partners with the CEO, and senior management team to shape, implement, and regularly monitor the company’s growth strategy. The incumbent will lead the Field and Market Development team to effectively grow sales in the core commercial small employer markets through direct sales, Public Sector market, and the large client segment. The incumbent will lead a team of Vice President level market leaders who partner with our career agent distribution and home office leaders to develop and implement recommendations to improve our sales effectiveness including, but not limited to; direct sales programs, promotions, services, enrollment solutions, compensation, structure, distribution, products and services. This position will directly influence sales through direct distribution as well as identify systematic ways to improve sales across our field organization.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide leadership and strategic direction for sales strategies that lead to increased sales through direct sales throughout all customer segments. In particular, provide strategic leadership to grow direct sales in the small employer customer segment and strategic leadership to grow sales across (1) core commercial, (2) Public Sector, and (3) large commercial and Public Sector customer segments.
- Accountable for developing future oriented integrated enrollment strategies and solutions aligned to needs of our markets to achieve growth objectives
- Accountable for the generation and execution of market strategies for the suite of Unum US and Colonial Life enrollment capabilities (Inclusive of Telephonic Enrollment Services (TES), Benefit Counselors, Self-Serve, Hosted Solutions, and Web Service Integrations)
- Accountable for building a high degree of trust and credibility among internal and external stakeholders; responsible for understanding the current and emerging business and technology environment and developing a clear and targeted set of initiatives to support the US businesses value propositions. Must be willing and able to balance competing demands and prioritize initiatives effectively. Also accountable for identifying enrollment-related acquisitions and alliances that can speed growth and improve performance
- Accountable for defining and delivering an enrollment experience that is suited to the needs of the client and the consumer and that is seamless regardless of the technology involved. Must ensure that employees/consumers connect to their benefits through a positive enrollment experience, including personalized multimedia campaigns, and simplified, bundled products that simplify decision making and facilitate well-informed benefit decisions that yield quality participation
- Accountable for designing and delivering external partner level infrastructure components related to development and implementation of enrollment solutions and services including enrollment coordination, implementation, communication tools, benefit administration services and connections to third party enrollment firms / vendors that apply to all Unum and Colonial Life product lines
- This position partners with Global Services to provide the technology and expertise needed for highly efficient and effective automated enrollment solutions for all products, diverse enrollment methods and to meet expectations of our consumers. Responsible for identifying and building the business case for investments required ($ and/or Resources)
- Accountable for creating and maintaining appropriate metrics/analytics to ensure effectiveness and success in driving growth. This includes but is not limited to expected impacts on Participation or Persistency (% change)
- Lead corporate development efforts on behalf of Colonial Life within the enterprise by scanning the external marketplace for development opportunities and presenting for review and assessment.
- Support the sales organization in communicating Colonial Life’s enrollment capabilities to producer groups and customers
- Accountable for 3rd party connections; supporting flexibility of integration across a broad set of potential technology platforms including hosting, web service integration, and vendor mgmnt framework.
- Communication with both internal and external thought leaders in disciplines that have the potential to grow our business
- Evaluate potential business investments, new ventures, acquisitions
- Partner effectively with individuals across the home office and the field organization
- Provide direction and oversight of the field development strategy focused on Recruiting, Sales Training, and Leadership Development
- Strategic partner to Senior Vice President of Sales and Vice Presidents of Sale to identify opportunities to strengthen distribution growth and ensure Field Development programs support sales growth initiatives
- Provide direction and oversight of the Broker Management strategy. Ensuring growth in sales on a broad base in new and existing accounts and through new and existing reps. Driving growth from both the public sector distribution channel as well as from the public sector market written through the agency distribution channel
Job Specifications
- 15+ plus years experience in employee and/or voluntary benefits
- Strong understanding of Unum and Colonial Life’s business, markets and competitors.
- Strong sales orientation.
- Strong customer service and advocacy orientation.
- Strong strategic vision and ability to implement corporate strategy
- Strong financial acumen
- Strong knowledge and experience in corporate development, mergers & acquisitions, and business integration.
- Strong external market focus and customer focus
- Strong knowledge and experience working with career agent distribution systems
- Excellent presentation and public speaking skills.
- Skill sets include both sales acumen and business professional focus
- Demonstrated senior leadership and staff development
- Proven experience or capability in leading complex organizational consolidations and/or start-up operating with strong understanding of the technology needed to do so.
- Ability to travel extensively
- Ability to work effectively in a large cross functional home office environment
- Strong critical thinking; ability to assess complex strategic issues and drive conclusions and recommendations
- Proven ability to work effectively with people at all levels in a matrix environment

The base salary range for applicants for this position is listed below. Unless actual salary is indicated above in the job description, actual pay will be based on skill, geographical location and experience.
$229,900.00-$414,400.00Additionally, Unum offers a portfolio of benefits and rewards that are competitive and comprehensive including healthcare benefits (health, vision, dental), insurance benefits (short & long-term disability), performance-based incentive plans, paid time off, and a 401(k) retirement plan with an employer match up to 5% and an additional 4.5% contribution whether you contribute to the plan or not. All benefits are subject to the terms and conditions of individual Plans.
