The School of Engineering & Technology (SET) at the University of Washington Tacoma has an opportunity for a System Administrator (Senior Computer Specialist).

SET was initially established as the Institute of Technology in 2001 to provide a polytechnic school to service the State of Washington. Originally offering degrees in Computer Science, SET has grown to offer degrees in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Information Technology. It will be offering degrees in Mechanical and Civil Engineering in 2021 and 2022, respectively.

Working under the direction of the SET Director of Operations, the System Administrator is a member of a larger lab support team. Working with the Sr. System Administrator, the System Administrator provides curricular and research support to the SET faculty to include:
  • Supporting and developing virtual computing/networking environment for learning/research in SET labs and server rooms
  • Assisting in the purchase of SET lab computing/networking infrastructure and course equipment
  • Installing, configuring, and updating operating systems, database systems, and applications
  • Guiding and supporting technology used in faculty research
  • Collaborating with campus IT staff to support SET classroom computing needs
  • Monitoring and improving systems, web, applications, and network security
  • Other duties as assigned

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science (or related field) and two or more years of system and network administration support experience or equivalent combination of education/experience.

    ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Proficiency in administering both Windows and Linux client and server systems
  • Proficiency with Windows batch and Linux shell scripts, Perl programs, HTML, and SQL
  • Demonstrated excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Cultivate positive working relationships with staff, faculty, and management
  • Outstanding knowledge of software maintenance
  • Excellent problem solving and analytical skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with diverse individuals

    DESIRED:
  • Experience with coding in PHP, Apache Ant, AutoIT Script, and Python
  • Ability to manage FirebirdSQL, SQL Server, MariaDB/MySQL, Postgres, and other DBMSes, including connecting via clients and programmatically (JDBC/ODBC)
  • Experience with various file systems (ZFS, EXT4, NTFS), iSCSI configuration, and connecting
  • Knowledge of disk partition management, cloning, and wiping techniques
  • Experience with Xymon and RequestTracker or other issue tracking software
  • Knowledge of event log utility and management, including Splunk

    Conditions of Employment
  • General computer classrooms and labs, Engineering labs. Must be able to lift at least 50lbs. Servers and some equipment are accessed in confined spaces.
