The Science and Technology Directorate is seeking early career technicians to engage with our national security mission in research, development, and experimentation. You will have the opportunity to work on teams that ensure the security of the United States and its allies by: supporting the stewardship of the nation’s nuclear deterrent; executing national-level experiments in support of the National Nuclear Security Administration’s National Laboratories; working with national security partners such as the Department of Defense, the Intelligence Community, and other federal agencies on important national security activities; and providing long-term environmental stewardship of the NNSS’s Cold War legacy.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in the fabrication, assembly, troubleshooting, characterization, testing, calibration, and repair of current mode radiation detector assemblies with specific task direction and supervision from scientists, engineers and experienced technical staff.
- Perform work of moderate complexity with oversight and assist in data collection and data entry.
- Solder electrical components to circuit boards according to approved drawings, handle delicate devices, and calibrate detector systems with light sources and radiation sources. Following established technical procedures for data collection and measurement, the technician will characterize completed detector systems using a variety of calibration methods. These systems use a variety of advanced laboratory equipment including high power lasers, high voltage power supplies, optical power meters, oscilloscopes, electrometers, and radiation generating devices (RGDs).
- Train to become an RGD operator. They will work with a variety of photodetectors including but, not limited to, photodiodes, photomultiplier tubes, micro-channel plate devices and solid-state devices. They will also work with a variety of assembled radiation detectors including but, not limited to, semiconductor detectors and scintillator detectors.
- Collect characterization data and organize it into spreadsheets, databases, and data sheets to be reviewed by engineers and scientists. The technician may be expected to perform initial data analysis using established analysis routines.
- Associate degree in field related to the position or High School diploma plus 2 years’ progressive related experience.
- One (1) year experience with electronics, basic hand tools, and measurement and test equipment (e.g., oscilloscopes, power supplies, optical sensors).
- Understanding of drawings and schematics (mechanical and electrical).
- Competent in basic electronics troubleshooting.
- Basic computer and MS Office Skills: Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
- High attention to detail.
- Professional communication skills (both written and verbal).
- Self-motivated.
- Ability to work with hands to assemble delicate instruments and solder small components.
- Ability to work in a basement and in rooms with no windows.
- Ability to self-train to use other computer programs (such as Lab View, MATLAB, etc).
- Ability to work in a team environment including professional scientists, engineers, designers and technicians.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions and established procedures.
- Effective interpersonal skills to communicate with coworkers, management, and customers.
- Desired Skills:
- Experience hand-wiring circuit boards and soldering.
- Experience with printed circuit board design and fabrication.
- Experience in a laboratory research setting with direct knowledge about photomultiplier tubes, photodiodes, micro-channel plates, and radiation detectors.
- Experience with other software (LabView, MATLAB).
- The primary work location will be at the Losee Road facility in North Las Vegas, Nevada.
- Pre-placement physical examination, which includes a drug screen, is required. MSTS maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license.
