TELECOMMUNICATIONS TECHNICIAN
Public Building Authority of the County of Knox and the City of Knoxville,

PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION: Responsible for installation of equipment used to switch telecommunications circuits and installs and maintains voice, video data, and telemetry switching and end devices. Places wire, cable, and jumper wires (fiber, coax, UTP, STP, etc.) to extend circuits from telecommunications closets or telecommunications equipment rooms to workstations. Tests operation of wire, cable and equipment after installation.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The following duties are required of this position:
Assumes a role for installation and maintenance projects and the work of the installation and maintenance team. Installs equipment used to switch telecommunications circuits and installs and maintains voice, video data, and telemetry switching and end devices. Places wire, cable, and jumper wires (fiber, coax, UTP, STP, etc.) to extend circuits from telecommunications closets or telecommunications equipment rooms to workstations. Tests operation of wire, cable and equipment after installation.

MINIMUM TRAINING AND QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Certificate from an accredited vocational institution or the equivalent in formal education, industry training, and experience.
2. BICSI technical certification or certification from one or more manufacturers regarding the installation and testing of fiber, copper, coaxial cable or the ability to demonstrate the equivalent in formal education, industry training, and experience.
3. Manufacturer or other recognized training on NEC 2400 series equipment
(IMGx, MMG, etc.) is desired.
4. Combination of three (3) years experience in telecommunications (voice, data, video and telemetry) wire, cable and equipment installation.
5. Must have no felony convictions. Must have no misdemeanor convictions that would compromise the mission of the Public Building Authority.
6. Must possess a valid Tennessee driver’s license.
7. Ability to work a flexible schedule that will include unusual hours and/or long days.
8. Must maintain a professional appearance and demeanor.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
1. Work in confined spaces.
2. Sit for extended periods.
3. View a computer monitor for long periods of time.
4. Operate a vehicle to visit various sites managed by PBA.
5. Differentiate colors and shades of color.
6. Manipulate tools and instruments required of the position.
7. Lift and carry, for short distances, up to 50 pounds of wire or equipment.
8. Ability to climb ladders and work on roofs, in attics, and above ceilings.
