Position Overview: The Thrift Shop Associate provides support to the Pantry and Shop Manager with the daily operations of The Shop. The Shop Associate will assist with managing the entire shop including the supervision of volunteers, managing donation intake, managing the cash register, and ensuring store cleanliness and efficient staging and pricing of merchandise. This position is a hands-on job that includes physical labor (must be able to lift 25 lbs.), sorting, marking, displaying, cashiering, and cleaning. This position is also responsible for supporting Ecommerce and online sites.

Position: Thrift Shop Associate

Reports To: Pantry and Shop Manager

Location: 169 Chestnut St., Nutley

Hours: 40 hrs./week exempt. Mon-Fri 8am-4pm, possible evenings and weekends

Major Duties:

  • Assist the Pantry and Shop Manager with the day-to-day operations of the Thrift Shop; process donations; manage the rotation of items; dispose of unsold items in a timely fashion; coordinate and oversee the pick-up of donations. Assist with the management of the store in the Manager’s absence.
  • Assist with E-commerce to include but not limited to, managing Ecommerce donation intake, and sorting through general donations, detecting items to post, preparing listing, answering questions, shipping, overall responsibility of maintaining the Ecommerce site.
  • The general upkeep of the store includes identifying and reporting maintenance or unsafe conditions issues to the Pantry and Shop Manager.
  • Assist with implementing written procedures for store operations.
  • Provide direction and oversight of volunteers in accordance with NFSB policies and applicable laws, work with the Pantry and Shop Manager to ensure adequate coverage, support volunteers and staff on the sales floor with customer concerns, pricing issues, etc.
  • Provide direction and oversight of volunteers in the processing of donations at the shed, POD, and recycling area.
  • Oversee the financial aspects of operations in the absence of the Pantry and Shop Manager: verify accuracy of all banking transactions including sales receipts and deposits.
  • Continually assess factors that contribute to the Shop’s success; analyze current sales and current inventory to provide projections and recommendations.
  • Assist the Pantry and Shop Manager in developing e-commerce sites.
  • Provide regular reports on the status of the program to the Pantry and Shop Manager.
  • Must be reliable and consistent with punctuality.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • High School Graduate or equivalent
  • Prior experience in retail sales preferred, or experience that enables an individual to effectively manage, oversee and operate a store, effectively interact, work with and supervise volunteers participating in the store’s day to day operations.
  • Previous e-commerce and online sales experience strongly preferred
  • Strong customer service skills
  • Strong social media skills.
  • A strong team player with the ability to plan, whether working with staff, or scheduling volunteers.
  • Well organized, with the ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Proficient in computer skills, especially using Outlook, Word, Excel, and custom databases.
  • Commitment to maintain confidentiality.
  • Understanding the organization’s mission and culture with the ability to maintain appropriate boundaries with staff, volunteers, and customers in all circumstances.
  • Awareness and sensitivity to the cultures represented by the organization.
  • Good inter-personal skills, ability to relate well with people from a variety of backgrounds in socioeconomic and cultural groups.

Job Types: Full-time, Contract

Pay: $16.50 per hour
