Join our RCOH Fleet Support Group at the Newport News Shipyard! The position will support contracted skilled trades work on Weapon Elevators and Aircraft Elevators and their associated systems on U.S. Navy ships. Excellent opportunity for a prospective High School graduate or equivalent who has successfully completed skill trades course work/program interested in an entry level trades positions.

The selected candidate will support ESU by performing a variety of skilled trades, maintenance and technical tasks on aircraft carrier elevators, cargo handling systems and associated equipment, including aircraft elevators, weapons elevators and vertical stores conveyors. Selected candidate will work closely with higher level employee in specialized assignments. May train/assist other employees/navy personal on shipboard systems and day-to-day operation. Work includes daily activities of physical labor in an industrial and shipboard environment. Your accomplishments will make a positive impact supporting the U.S. Navy and America’s national defense! What You Will DO

  • Assists workers in the skilled maintenance trades.
  • Performs specific or general duties of lesser skill, such as supplying or holding materials and tools; cleaning working area, machine, and equipment; and performing other unskilled tasks as directed.
  • Tasks vary. Position may perform specialized machine operations.
  • Performs maintenance and minor repairs to various machines under supervision.
  • May make local pick up and deliveries of supplies and company equipment and material, paint, lag, surface preparation and minor facilities maintenance.
  • Check and return tools from tool room. Assists in receipt and inventory of material, tools and equipment.
  • Trade apprenticeship opportunity available in this role.

What You Must Have

The selected student must be in good academic standing and be enrolled in or completed skilled trades course work/program. Candidate will be required to provide a copy of their transcript confirming successful completion of their degree and related courses prior to start.


  • Must have High School education or equivalent, and 1 year of related experience or a Trade School Diploma/Equivalent.
  • Must be currently enrolled or have recently completed a vocational school or skilled trades certificate program.
  • Must have knowledge and/or experience in a trades specialty (i.e. mechanical, electrical, welding, HVAC, fitting).
  • Must have experience working in a team environment.
  • Must have ability to follow safety protocols and procedures.
  • Must be able to obtain base access credentials within 60 days of hire and maintain them throughout employment.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • Must be able to provide own hand tools as designated per trades specialty.
  • Must be a New Horizons Graduate

Bonus Points For Having

  • Candidates with current transferable trades certifications preferred.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, technical manuals and/or related technical documents a plus
  • Knowledge/ability of using various mechanical industrial tools such as precision measuring instruments, minor rigging equipment, portable power units and mechanical fastening devices or equivalent a plus.

Physical Requirements

Must be able to lift, carry and transport heavy equipment and boxes. The exact weight requirements will be determined by the specific job, but no less than 30 lbs. Able to work on and climb ladders, work in extreme temperature environments, aboard ships, in shipyards, under industrial conditions and in confined spaces. Able to perform other duties as required which may involve high heat, humidity, noise and dirty conditions, working aloft or over the sides of vessels. May ride ships at sea for extended periods. May require wearing a respirator. Most work is performed aboard ships or in industrial conditions. Travel may be required within and outside of the continental United States.
