Starting Salary: $34.913/hour - $68,080/year

37.5 hour workweek



SUMMARY:

This is very skilled electrical work involving the installation and maintenance of Township street
lighting and traffic signals.

Work involves responsibility for the installation, maintenance and repair of traffic control
equipment and overhead street lighting. Duties include working with 240 volt/amps secondary
electrical lines, installing overhead lighting from a bucket truck, re-lamping traffic signals and
related maintenance work. This position also has the responsibility for making day-to-day
journey level decisions. This work requires that the employee have considerable knowledge,
skill and ability in electrical work including working with and around high voltage wires and the
maintenance and installation of complex electronic and mechanical traffic signals.



SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

Works under the general supervision of the Electric Shop Crew Leader.



ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Operates and works from a bucket truck from considerable heights while installing, maintaining
and inspecting street lighting and traffic signals.

Replaces fixtures, rewires arms, and taps into 240 volt/amps secondary electrical lines.

Re-lamps traffic signals, straightens heads and repairs visors. Programs and makes timing
changes in traffic signal controllers. Maintains school signals and timing devices.

Assembles new traffic signals, runs conduit across highways, and installs concrete bases for mast
arms and pedestal poles. Wires control cabinets, installs signals and initiates the operation of the
signals at intersections according to required specifications. Tests, troubleshoots, and terminates
Fiber Optic cables.

Maintains stock of parts, tools and equipment in truck and provides routine maintenance on
truck.

Operates tools, equipment and vehicles in a safe and efficient manner.

Completes routine forms relating to work completed and materials used.

Performs work of lower classifications as necessary.

Acts as lead worker when working with employees of a lower classification.

Is on call for emergencies involving street light and traffic signal trouble work to repair
hazardous highway conditions.

May be assigned to other Public Works divisions to perform required duties.

Performs related work as required.



QUALIFICATIONS:

A high school diploma, or the equivalent, preferably from a trade school, supplemented by
specialized training in street lighting maintenance involving high voltage and some training in
electronic equipment maintenance, plus three years of increasingly responsible electrical
experience.

Valid class B driver's license free of air brake restriction.

Must be Traffic Signal Level II Certified Technician by the International Municipal Signal
Association or ability to obtain certification with the IMSA class constraints.

Considerable knowledge of the tools, equipment and methods used in installing and maintaining
traffic signals.

Considerable knowledge of the tools, equipment and methods used in installing and maintaining
street lighting, including working with and around high voltage lines.

Considerable knowledge of the work standards and safety procedures in highway lighting and
traffic signal work.

Considerable knowledge of solid-state controllers and devices used in traffic signal operations.
Must be able to program an NEMA Solid State electronic controller.

Considerable skill in the operation of a bucket truck and the hand tools and power equipment
used in traffic signal and lighting work.

Some ability to complete forms and to write routine reports.

Some ability to act as a lead worker when employees of lower classifications assist in operations.

Good working knowledge of a closed loop traffic signal system.

Must be available for after hours emergency call out and carry a Township issued phone on a
rotating weekly basis.



PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Ability to sit for a minimum of 4 to 8 hours, stand for a minimum of 4 to 8 hours, walk for a
minimum of 4 to 8 hours, and drive for a minimum of 4 to 8 hours in a workday.

Ability to climb and reach above shoulder level continuously.

Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, lift and push/pull up to 75% of the workday.

Ability to squat, crawl, and crouch for up to 35% of the workday.

Ability to lift and carry a minimum of 50 pounds of tools, equipment and materials for up to 68%
of the workday and lift and carry up to 100 pounds of tools, equipment and materials for up to
35% of the workday.

Ability to use both feet for operation of foot controls of machinery.

Ability to use both hands for simple grasping, firm grasping and fine manipulation of tools,
equipment and objects.

Ability to perform job functions using safety precautions on unprotected heights including
bucket truck and extension ladder.

Ability to perform job functions using safety precautions on a ladder.
