The Trails Coordinator position at Sarasota County is professional work coordinating activities for safe park/trail use and positive visitor experiences; planning, organizing, and implementing multi-use trail and trailhead maintenance including The Legacy Trail, The Legacy Trail Extension, and its connectors.
Job Description:
Multi-use recreational trail and trailhead management:
  • Regular on-site inspections of trails and trailhead parks including facilities and amenities to ensure safe and enjoyable experiences for patrons, volunteers, and staff.
  • Documents needs or deficiencies and submits service requests through utilization of the work management software; assigns task to Trades Worker or completes repairs and projects as needed.
  • Ensures maintenance and trail notices are communicated to the public.
  • Develops scope of work for contractual projects and submits through the appropriate procurement process.
  • Coordinates contractual services and in-house projects for assigned trails and trailhead parks.
  • Promotes environmental standards for protection of species and habitats consistent with the Environment Chapter of the Comprehensive Plan.
  • Stewardship of resources, protected species and habitats including nuisance invasive and exotic vegetation and animal management, habitat protection and enhancement.
  • Coordination with inter-agency and inter-department trail partners.
  • Retrieval and management of trail counts and counter maintenance.
  • Manages proactive assessments of fraud awareness, prevention, detection, and risk mitigation activities in area of responsibility; compliance, operational and performance audits; reviews audit findings and ensures appropriate controls are established and implemented.
Volunteer management including:
  • Recruits, trains and coordinates volunteers.
  • Assists with the planning and development of volunteer events and programs and assists with volunteer organizations.
Programming outreach and events:
  • Plans, develops, and implements a range of customer focused, nature-based programs and outdoor recreational opportunities.
  • Ensures reservation and event permits are complete and well-managed.
Work Hours: Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
About You
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in one of the biological or natural sciences, recreation, leisure services, education or related field, and two (2) years of professional experience directly related to the position.
  • A Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university in above fields can substitute for one year of professional experience.
  • Progressively responsible related professional experience can substitute on a year-for-year bases for the required college education.
  • Possession of a valid Florida Driver License
  • Ability to obtain certification in CPR and First Aid within the first (6) months of employment.
  • May require certification as a Master Naturalist, NPA Professional, Pool Operator, Water Safety, or Natural Area Training.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Recreational multi-use trail management and maintenance experience.
  • Advanced professional certification such as National Recreation and Parks Association Certified Parks and Recreation Professional, Natural Areas Training Academy Certified Natural Areas Manager, Natural Areas pesticide applicator license.
Subject to Passing Substance Screening: This position is subject to passing a pre-employment substance screening. An applicant who fails to pass a required drug screening test shall be disqualified from employment in any class for a period of five (5) years.
