40-hour work week

RANGE & RATE: Schedule WA00 Range 07
Starting salary: $31.770/hour – $66,082/year



SUMMARY:

This is skilled forestry work involving tree climbing and bucket work to trim, cut and remove
trees. Duties include pruning, planting, fertilizing and removing trees through various measures
such as climbing and operating of a bucket truck. The work requires that the employee have
considerable knowledge, skill and ability in the standard practices, tools and safety precautions
used in tree trimming and removal.



ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Performs the hazardous and skilled tasks in municipal forestry such as working at heights and
performing difficult tree operations.

Climbs trees, often to hazardous heights, using climbing hooks, belts and ropes to remove dead,
damaged or dangerous limbs.

Operates light and heavy specialized forestry equipment such as a brush chipper, bucket truck,
dump truck, chain saw and front-end loader.

Observes signs of diseases and disorders in trees and brings to the attention of the crew leader.

Performs a variety of laboring and semi-skilled tasks, such as raking, stump removal, lot
clearing, grading, seeding, planting, transplanting and snow removal using a variety of hand
tools.

Performs winter maintenance on Township streets and parks to include the operation of a
snowplow and manual shoveling of snow.

Must be available for on-call for emergencies.

Required to work outside of the normal workday for emergency purposes to deal with the
outcome of storm damage.

QUALIFICATIONS:

High school or trade school diploma or equivalent plus a minimum of (3) years tree maintenance
experience, consecutive full-time recent tree maintenance experience preferred.

International Society of Arboriculture Arborist Certification desirable.

Must possess and maintain a valid Class C Commercial Driver's License; Class B Commercial
Driver’s License (CDL-B) free of air brake restriction preferred. All candidates with a Class C
Driver’s License will be required to obtain a Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL-B) free
of air brake restriction within nine (9) months of hire.

Good knowledge of the standard practices, tools and safety precautions employed in tree
trimming and removal operations.

Good skill in the proper use and maintenance requirements of hand and power tools used in
forestry work.

Good knowledge of the more common insects and diseases that attack trees, as well as methods
and materials used in their control.

Considerable ability to climb trees, work at heights and perform strenuous work outdoors
possibly under adverse weather conditions.

Considerable ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors,
co-workers and the general public.

Good ability to safely operate heavy automotive equipment, including a bucket truck.

Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.



PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Ability to sit for a minimum of 1 up to 8 hours, stand for a minimum of 6 up to 8 hours, walk for
a minimum of 6 up to 8 hours and drive for a minimum of 1 up to 8 hours per workday. In
severe weather conditions, ability to sit and drive for up to 16 hours.

Ability to bend, stoop, climb, reach above shoulder level, lift and push/pull for up to 68% of the
workday.

Ability to crawl, crouch and kneel for up to 35% of the workday.

Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds of tools, equipment and materials including tree limbs
and debris for 68% of the workday and lift and carry up to 100 pounds of tools, equipment and
materials for up to 35% of the workday.

Ability to use both feet for operating foot controls of equipment.

Ability to use both hands for simple grasping, firm grasping and fine manipulation of tools,
equipment and objects.

Ability to work using safety precautions uninhibitedly from various heights and around moving
machinery.

Ability to work in all types of weather and temperatures.

Ability to drive automotive equipment.

Ability to work using safety precautions where environmental conditions may be challenging.

Ability to work using safety precautions around biting and stinging insects and poisonous
vegetation present in and around trees and tree debris.
