The Academy Principal is accountable for all aspects of the educational outcomes and welfare of students within the Academy, while fostering a healthy learning environment for our students. The Academy Principal should be able to articulate the vision for the Academy, while inspiring and empowering others through outstanding communication and partnership. This is a full-time, salary position.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responsible for the education of the students in the school
  • Responsible for student and staff safety and documentation of on-going safety drills
  • Approve or reject applications from prospective students and handle admissions
  • Foster relationships with VDOE, County and School Districts, scheduling regular IEP meetings
  • Ensure quality execution and compliance of IEPs
  • Manage patient transportation and acquisition of speaking devices as needed
  • Ensure that academic policies and curriculum are followed
  • Monitor education laws, rules and regulations to facilitate compliance with legal mandates
  • Develop and track benchmarks for measuring institutional success
  • Help teachers maximize their potential, ensure ongoing training and staff development
  • Responsible for initial and ongoing development of SLP / OTs
  • Meet and listen to concerns of employees on a regular basis; Encourage, guide and assist teachers
  • Meet with parents and administrators on a regular basis for problem resolution
  • Enforce discipline when necessary
  • Provide an atmosphere free of any bias in which students can achieve their maximum potential
  • Adhere to CARD policies and procedures
  • Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A Master’s degree in education, required
  • Minimum of two years of working experience as a school leader or principal
  • Experience working with special education population; autism preferred
  • Previous role as a special education teacher preferred
  • Valid teaching license
  • An effective communicator in both verbal and written formats
  • Communication skills to develop a productive educational experience for both teachers and students
  • Problem solving abilities to enhance teacher performance and improve student grades
  • Exemplary leadership qualities to include being motivating, diplomatic and professional
  • Reliable means of transportation with proof of auto insurance for some locations
  • No past criminal history
  • Must pass tuberculosis test

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The Academy Principal works within the Academy, primarily in an office setting. The Academy Principal will supervise the education staff and oversee the day-to-day school operations. The Academy Principal may also sit in on therapy sessions in the classroom, enforce policies and ensure Academy compliance requirements are met.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be able to work with students who are seated on the floor, in small chairs, or other school environments
  • Move frequently throughout the therapeutic setting to gather materials, anticipate and respond to the movement of a student, and/or provide instruction in a variety of settings within the Academy
  • Constantly position oneself to participate and respond to the movements and behaviors of students, including but not limited to bending to assist a student, kneeling/crouching to teach a play skill, hurrying to block an open doorway, or reaching to prevent a student from entering a traffic congested street
  • Must be able to utilize continuous visual tracking in order to monitor the movement of students, as well as the items and circumstances in the surrounding environment
  • Occasionally move to evade aggressive behaviors and/or physically block attempts to aggress towards others
  • Must be able to respond to behaviors that may occasionally require bearing weight of a student who is leaning, pushing, etc.
  • Frequently teach students to use vocal speech. Must be able to articulate sound and model speaking clearly, as well as listen to and shape vocal communication of students
  • Occasionally use modeling to teach gross motor skills, such as climbing or jumping, and fine motor skills such as clapping or opening a container
  • Work in both indoor and outdoor settings as they relate to the student’s natural environment, which may include being outdoors in a variety of weather conditions (e.g., community skills, recess in a school setting, etc.)
  • Be able to lift up to 30 lbs. while assisting students
  • Must participate in Assaultive Behavior Management (ABM) training at least once a year
