Position Overview:

SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory is one of 17 Department of Energy National Laboratories. SLAC is operated by Stanford University on behalf of DOE. SLAC and develops and operates some of the world's premier science facilities including the first hard X-ray free electron laser. SLACs operations occur on 400 + acres of the Stanford University site.

We're seeking a safety coordinator for 1) Next Linear Collider Test Accelerator (NLCTA)/Accelerator Structure Test Area (ASTA) facilities, and 2) LINAC facility. The successful candidate is expected to manage and coordinate facility, health, and safety issues for buildings and associated areas occupied by the Accelerator Directorate.

Given the nature of this position, SLAC is open to on-site and hybrid work options.

Your specific responsibilities include:

  • Work under consultative or self-initiated direction to develop, implement, and maintain programs, systems, and procedures necessary to ensure the overall safety and health of employees and the community.
  • Act as a lead or technical expert, providing functional direction and training in the overall application of health and safety programs.
  • Conduct comprehensive, independent compliance assurance reviews of environmental, health, and safety policies and procedures; prepare accompanying management reports, documentation, and evaluations.
  • Monitor and prevent potential hazards and unsafe conditions that could be present in the accelerator work area.
  • Investigate accidents, incidents, injuries, and complaints concerning potential hazards or unsafe conditions in the workplace.
  • Recommend and implement improvements in processes, design, procedures, and operating equipment to minimize the hazard potential.
  • May lead a team responsible for developing and implementing environmental and/or safety programs.
  • Other duties may also be assigned.

To be successful in this position you will bring:

  • Bachelor's degree in arts/science in related allied/scientific/engineering field and seven years progressively responsible experience in occupational safety and health, emergency response/management, environmental science, and/or allied/scientific/engineering field or equivalent combination of education or experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct effective health and safety surveys, quantitative and qualitative exposure/ risk assessments, and most complex data analyses; ability to provide recommendations for exposure/risk control.
  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with diverse audiences; ability to explain technical concepts clearly and concisely.
  • Ability to maintain current knowledge of and interpret specific government agency requirements (statutes, regulations, licenses, and permits) and university policies.
  • Working knowledge of the scientific and technical aspects of various regulatory requirements and potential impact on assigned work area(s).
  • Demonstrated supervisory/coaching expertise.

In addition, preferred requirements include:

  • Knowledge of accelerator systems such as cavities, operations slash design, diagnostics, and detectors.
  • Understanding of processes of radiation generation and shielding efficacies.
  • Understanding operation of pulsed power sources such as modulators and high-power systems used for SSA's, magnets, and other accelerator support.

The expected pay range for this position is $130,000 to $155,000 per annum. SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory/Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
