Adoption Coordinator/Deputy Probate Register I Job at Lenawee County, MI
JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY
Under the supervision of the (Circuit/Family) Juvenile/Probate Court Director & Assistant Court Administrator, the position of the Adoption Coordinator Clerk/Deputy Probate Register I serves the community through management of cases moving towards adoption and the mental health codes.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Management of adoption coordination:
Review all agency/attorney adoption petitions for content accuracy, appropriate reviews, supervisory reports.
Investigate, evaluation, and report on petitioner(s) to determine the suitability of the proposed adoption (including conducting home visits)
Attend and testify in Court hearings, as needed.
Respond to inquiries from the public, attorneys, and agencies regarding all facets of adoption.
Process requests for non-identifying, identifying, and confidential intermediary post-adoption services
Monitor and ensure timely submission of reports by agencies.
Work closely with the Michigan Department of Vital Records and the Central Adoption Registry.
Assist and coordinate local Michigan Adoption Day celebration.
Maintain working knowledge of court policies, adoption and mental health laws, and court rules:
Attend meetings, educational conferences, and other training offerings.
Keep supervisor informed of status of case-flow, any pending issues, and assist in trainings as needed
Management of mental illness (MI) filings:
Process petitions for involuntary treatment for individuals alleged to have mental illness after determining whether paperwork is complete and accurate.
Coordinate with other counties' Probate Courts to process out-of-county MI petitions.
Coordinate communication between hospitals, agencies, attorneys, judicial staff, and the public, as case requires.
Abilities, Knowledge and Skills:
Working knowledge of computers and modern office practices and procedures i.e. telephone, fax machine, calculator, and computer software, including word processing, database, email/internet
Possession of a valid driver's license (required)
County employees must be physically and mentally able to perform the essential duties of their position without excessive absences.
Ability to maintain detailed and organized files.
Monitor case status and ensure deadlines/time guidelines are met as required
Ability to maintain confidentiality of court records.
Employment is dependent on background check, criminal history and fingerprint check and drug screen
Must comply with Model Code of Conduct for Michigan Trail Court Employees.
Excellent English, grammar, and proofreading skills.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
High School diploma or GED is required.
Preferred one (1) year experience in a Court related setting.
Preferred working knowledge of the State of Michigan court system procedures, statutes, and State Court Administrative Office rules, specifically related to Probate/Family Court.
County Employees are expected to possess and maintain a record of orderly, law abiding citizenship, sobriety, integrity, and loyalty as it pertains to and reflects upon their employment with the County.
In addition to the above requirements, all Court positions require the ability to read, write, speak, and understand the English language as necessary for the position, including the ability to follow written and oral instruction.
WORKING CONDITIONS
This position is public service oriented. While the majority of work is performed primarily in an office setting, the Adoption Coordinator/Deputy Probate Register I must occasionally enter clients' homes. As such, the employee may encounter challenging clients, unique scents, and home environments. This person will also experience inclement weather as the position is community oriented, ie.e they must travel in the community during all seasons. Tasks may require moving heavy boxes.
Physical Requirements
The Adoption Coordinator/Deputy Probate Register's physical requirements are outside of average office and desk work and may require some lifting and filing of court files and documents. It also includes dealing with, at times, hostile and possibly volatile youth and adults. The Adoption Coordinator/Deputy Probate Register I must also travel throughout Lenawee County and possibly beyond with his/her personal vehicle, the County fiduciary, will pay mileage to cover these traveling expenses.
