General Overview
Innovation is a 140 person Mass General Brigham business development unit responsible for the worldwide commercial application of the breakthroughs and unique capabilities of MGB’s 82,000 employees and Harvard faculty. It drives revenue generation and patient benefit through industry collaborations, investing, company creation, licensing, and innovation management for MGB’s Harvard Medical School appointed faculty and hospitals including its core Harvard affiliates - Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Massachusetts General Hospital, Massachusetts Eye and Ear and McLean Hospital.
Within the Innovation organization, Amplify and Mass General Brigham Ventures invest in precommercial and commercial technologies exclusively in the healthcare space. Amplify leverages $50M in translational funding to operates precommercial projects from MGB investigators that have high commercial potential. Mass General Brigham Ventures makes investments in companies alongside strong syndicate members in drugs, devices, diagnostics and digital health companies from its more than $350 million fund. These investments are based on intellectual property created within the MGB research community.

The Analyst will participate in the evaluation, operation, and investment in hospital technologies and portfolio companies for both Amplify and Mass General Brigham Ventures. The Analyst will have broad responsibilities spanning strategic development to operations at the nexus where academic technologies transition to commercialization.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities
Diligence/Monitoring
  • Engage with academic investigators to provide actionable feedback as well as help triage technologies for consideration for precommercial (Amplify) or commercial (Venture) investment
  • Building strong relationships with academic investigators as they continue to advance their technologies towards investment
  • Develop materials for and conduct interviews with academics, biomedical executives, investors, and reimbursors to aid in strategy development and technology evaluation
Indication Identification
  • Perform detailed evaluations to select the best disease areas to pursue with novel technologies
  • Work with the Amplify and Venture teams to construct disease pipelines for projects and investments
  • Rigorously canvas indication in prevalent to rare disease spaces, matching biological mechanisms, targets and medical practice/procedures to areas of commercial tractability
  • Provide consultative leadership on Indication Identification for the broader Innovation office
Strategy Development
  • Participate in strategic analyses of new areas of investment and Innovation focus
  • Engage across the MGB Innovation office, including with the Strategic Innovation Leader group to generate strategy white papers
Operations
  • Develop presentations for Venture, LP and VC meetings, Investment Committees, and Board of Managers with minimal direction
  • Analyze, record and report on portfolio investment performance
  • Support for LP reporting and interactions
  • Engage and assist Amplify Project Leads and Operating Partners in the execution of portfolio programs
Investment Analysis
  • Analyze and advise on the commercial potential of new technologies arising from MGB research, clinical services and information technology communities
  • Participate in the process of technology analysis, market analysis, business planning, and specific diligence around technical issues including regulatory and reimbursement requirements.
  • Identify and develop potential strategic partners and co-investors

Qualifications

  • PhD/MD and/or MBA with life science industry background
  • Minimum 2 years' experience including in with management consulting groups, investment firms, or companies focused on development of biomedical products
  • Knowledge of drug/device research, development, regulatory and reimbursement processes
  • Proven ability to successfully function in a large organization and to work as a team member in a multi-functional operating unit
  • BSci candidates with 5-7 years’ experience will also be considered

  • Top-notch PowerPoint capabilities and spreadsheet modeling capability, knowledge of capital structuring
  • Excellent project management skills and attention to detail
