Summary

  • Responsible for daily monitoring of animal health and other needs including administration of medicine and treatments, and collecting biological samples for diagnostic testing.
  • Applies knowledge of surgical skills by directing and assisting research staff in carrying out aseptic technique. Perform scrub nurse and circulating nurse functions during operative procedures. Monitor surgical protocols to ensure compliance with federal regulations and AAALAC standards.
  • Process newly arrived animals, observe for signs of illness or physical problems, assign a Loyola accession number, perform a complete physical exam, initiate treatment/vaccinations (at the discretion of the veterinarian) per “Quarantine, Conditioning, and Preventive Health” Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for each individual species. Perform annual physicals per SOPs.
  • Oversees maintenance of permanent data such as: individual animal records, surgical and experimental records, controlled substance usage, post operative care records, health records, room temperatures, animal census reports and other data as directed by the supervisor/manager.
  • Responsible for management of assigned special husbandry areas (i.e. barrier facilities). These areas may include responsibility for special duties such as implementing the environmental enrichment program, containment protocols, and other special duties as assigned by the veterinary staff.
  • Responsible for the care and maintenance of professional supplies, equipment and instrumentation. Responsible for maintaining an inventory of drugs and supplies, and ordering new items as necessary.
  • Assists and trains research faculty and technical staff in restraint and handling techniques and other specialized techniques as necessary.
  • Evaluation of required standards of physical plant and maintenance of environmental factors in animal rooms and support areas (i.e. surgical suites) and responsibility to report any non-compliant items or problems to the supervisor/manager.
  • Performs necropsy procedures as assigned by the veterinarian and process tissues for histologic evaluation if necessary.
  • Assists in orientation, teaching, and evaluation of Laboratory Animal Care Tech I, II, III, and IVs. Schedules Laboratory Animal Care Tech I, II, III, and IVs for daily work assignments in special areas (i.e. surgical suites), or as assigned in absence of the supervisor/manager.
  • Performs other duties as assigned
