Job Description Summary:
Work involves manual, semi-skilled and skilled work in an animal educational and research unit. Work involves providing sanitary environmental conditions and caring for animals. Work may also include assisting a veterinarian, scientist or other animal professionals in procedures and activities involving animal health and disease; supervising or independently performing a wide range of complex technical procedures and assisting or coordinating work with a professional staff. Some positions may provide leadership or supervision over staff.

Job Description:
The University of Kansas Medical Center (KUMC) animal resources are comprised of ~100,000 gross assigned sq. ft. in 4 buildings located on the KUMC campus in Kansas City, KS. The entire centralized animal care program at KUMC was fully accredited by the Association for Accreditation and Assessment of Laboratory Animal Care International (AAALAC) in 1992 and has maintained its accreditation since that time. Laboratory Animal Resources has grown to employ 40 persons and provide services for over 100 investigators and 500 research staff. Under the Team Leader's supervision, performs routine husbandry, janitorial, and some biotechnical procedures related to the care and use of laboratory animals. The incumbent will perform other duties as assigned by Laboratory Animal Resources (LAR) management, including veterinarian.

Work Hours: 6:00 am - 2:30 pm

Required Qualifications:
Must be 18 Years of Age. High School Diploma or GED.

3-5 years of relevant work experience may substitute for education.

Must be able and willing to work weekends and holidays.

Ability to lift 50 pounds.

Ability to wear personal protective equipment, including a respirator.

Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.

Ability to learn and apply new standard operating procedures and policies.

Basic computer skills.

Should receive Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) certification within 2 years of employment.

Should provide three professional references, including one from a direct supervisor.

Job Duties Outlined:
70% - Cage Washroom Duties Completes cage wash assignments according to standard operating procedures. Operates and maintains cage washers, autoclaves, and sanitizing equipment. Maintains adequate levels of cage wash chemicals. Scrapes and empties pans and cages of soiled bedding. Pre-cleans large animal racks for cage wash machinery. Washes caging equipment and autoclaves food, bedding, water bottles, nestlets, and appropriate covering. Prepares cage orders for LAR staff and researchers. Maintains detailed records of preventive maintenance schedules, detergent and disinfectant use, cage washer, and autoclave performance tests. Performs preventative maintenance on autoclaves, cage/rack washers, and other equipment. Disposes of waste materials. Sweeps, mops, and disinfects cage wash area at the end of the shift. Receives and stocks feed, bedding, and other supplies in the storage area. Performs scheduled decontaminations in cage wash areas. Cleans and organizes storage areas. Conducts minor equipment and caging repairs.

30% - Janitorial Duties Operates mechanical cleaning equipment. Maintains supply inventory and requests replacements as necessary. Disinfects animal rooms and support areas. Organizes and cleans storage areas. Other Follows supervisor directions for complying with established federal, state, and local regulations relating to laboratory animals and facilities. Follows established health and safety procedures. Follows facility security and traffic flow procedures.

Performs other duties as assigned.
