St. Norbert College, a nationally-ranked, Catholic, liberal arts college is seeking an Area Coordinator for Housing. This is a twelve-month, full-time, live-in position that is responsible for the management of multiple buildings with varied student living options. The position has a focus on personal development and academic success of the residents through collaboration with students, staff, and community partners. An Area Coordinator - Housing works to create an environment conducive to student engagement, respect for diversity, and a strong sense of community. The Area Coordinator also serves as a student judicial hearing officer, advises a community council if an area has an interest, supervises student staff members, participates and/or leads multiple committee opportunities, and serves on a 24-hour on-call duty rotation with four other Area Coordinators. The anticipated start date is June 1st.
Specific responsibilities:
Develop an environment that supports student development and a community that is conducive to academic success. Advise and present, in cooperation with student housing staff, the hall/area community council and other campus departments, educational and social programs, which will lead to a positive community environment, better self-understanding, appreciation of differences, and improved interpersonal relationships. Empower students to assume responsibility for decisions related to their living environment. - 20%
Responsible for the recruitment, supervision, training, development, and evaluation of all student housing staff throughout the year. Assist with the development and implementation of an orientation/training program and an in-service training program. Understand College policies and procedures and clearly explain them to others. Conduct weekly staff meetings which include staff development opportunities. Hold individual conferences with each student staff member and encourage regular communication. - 40%
Act as a student conduct administrator. Meet with students to discuss conduct issues, focusing on the learning processes that are involved while seeking a change in behavior. Create an advisor relationship with a hall/area community council that provides leadership opportunities for residents and encourages responsibility for decisions related to the living environment. Consult with residents in individual and group situations about academic, personal, spiritual, and vocational concerns. Manage crisis intervention and consult with counseling staff as needed. Train the student housing staff to work effectively with residents in one-to-one relationships. Train student housing staff to recognize personal limitations, to understand what services are available on campus, and to make referrals to the appropriate offices when necessary. Be available for consultations with staff, students, parents, and faculty. - 20%
Maintain individual resident records and ensure timely delivery of assignments and changes. Develop a working rapport with hall housekeepers and Facilities staff. Directly report all facilities issues, concerns, and needs and follow up with work requests and proper billing. Responsible for security, safety precautions, and training for emergencies. Open and close housing operated buildings each semester and during breaks. Coordinate requests for room changes. Responsible for the security and inventory of keys. Responsible for completing an annual report detailing work and learning in building throughout the year. - 20%
Perform additional duties as assigned and attend College required training. Regular attendance is required. Work in a manner that is aware of personal safety and the safety of others and observes safety, health and sanitation codes, regulations, or practices required by the College or governmental authority.
Supervision Exercised Over:
  • 5 - 12 Community Assistants and Resident Assistants (student housing staff)

Required Minimum Qualifications:
Education -
  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Master’s degree in College Student Personnel or a related area preferred.

Experience and Credentials -
  • At least two years of experience in student housing, campus programming, or similar work environment.
  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse campus environment or commitment to do so as an employee of St. Norbert College.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities -
  • Ability to function well in emergency situations, emotionally charged circumstances, and crises.
  • Ability to multitask, meet specific deadlines, and prioritize tasks and assignments.
  • Utilize personal and professional skills, including assessment, to identify student needs and provide assistance.
  • Ability to interact professionally with coworkers and students, particularly in conflict situations.
  • Ability to talk politely and resolve customer service issues.

  • Knowledge of computer programs (Microsoft Office, Google Apps) and ability to learn upgrades or new software as needed.

Working Conditions:
Professional office environment located within a residential space with frequent interruptions. On-call responsibilities to include some evenings and weekends (approximately 10 yearly). General hours are M-F from 8:00 am - 4:30 pm. Required to live on campus in a residential building.
