Area Port Coordinators Job at Saltwater

We are currently recruiting for Area Port Coordinators to assist with the deployment of Fishery Observers in the Pacific Islands Region Observer Program (PIROP). PIROP is responsible for deploying observers on U.S. fishing vessels to collect data on effort and catch, as well as incidental interactions with protected species, such as sea turtles and marine mammals.
Saltwater is submitting a proposal for a 5-year contract to provide observers for the PIROP. Work would likely start in the fall of 2023. The Area Port Coordinators will be full-time, Honolulu-based positions for the duration of the contract.
Position:
Area Port Coordinators are responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the PIROP, ensuring program objectives are met. They provide logistical support for observers and routinely interact with the fishing industry and NMFS staff. If you have exceptional people skills, are organized, thrive in fast-paced and high-pressure environments, and have previous experience as an observer coordinator, we would love to hear from you.
Duties:

  • Perform daily visual vessel surveys in Honolulu.
  • Assign observers to vessels.
  • Assemble, check, and prepare gear for the Observer’s deployment.
  • Schedule and transport Observers to Vessel Placement Meetings.
  • Conduct safety inspections.
  • Track Observer assignments and monitor performance.
  • Work with local project constituents.
  • Notify NMFS of potential infractions.
  • Submit weekly written reports.
  • Enforce standards of conduct, as necessary.
  • Provide observer support, when needed.
  • Ensure Observers complete post-trip NMFS requirements for debriefing and the disposition of data and specimens.

Requirements

  • Experience as a Manager / Supervisor in fisheries – or as an Observer Coordinator. Must be demonstrated work experience.
  • Worked as an Observer; PIROP Observer experience is preferred.
  • Ability to relocate to Honolulu, HI if not already living there.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Excellent people/communication skills.

Compensation
Salary range is dependent on the program, experience, and solicitation.
