Job Summary:
This position serves as the chief clinical veterinarian for the institution and reports to the Center for Comparative Research (CCR) director.

The successful candidate will manage the veterinary care program, maintain animal health surveillance programs, serve as a voting member of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee, and help to develop and refine animal care and use programs. The assistant/associate director will also assists with the education and training of animal care personnel, laboratory technicians and investigators. Additionally the successful candidate will be eligible for a faculty appointment in a discipline commensurate with education and experience.

The Medical Center is the state’s only academic health sciences center with Schools of Medicine, Nursing, Health Related Professions, Dentistry, Population Health and the Graduate Program. Additionally, a strong collaborative relationship exists with our affiliate Veteran’s Affairs Medical Center. The expanding research mission uses a wide variety of laboratory animal species involved in numerous disciplines, including hypertension and cardiovascular dynamics, obesity and related diseases, cancer biology and treatment, chemical dependency, and broad neuroscience applications. The CCR is the centrally administered organization responsible for the care and maintenance of research animals, encompassing approximately 70,000 square feet of space. Animal care and use programs maintain full accreditation by AAALAC International.
Education & Experience
  • Licensed DVM/VMD
  • Board certification (or board eligible) by the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Provide clinical veterinary care in support of the institution’s biomedical animal research mission.
  • Manage the continuing health-monitoring program.
  • Facilitate the advancement and growth of the anesthesia and surgical support functions of the Center for Comparative Research.
  • Engage with key support entities of the institution, including Facilities Services, Environmental Health & Safety, occupational health services, compliance personnel, etc. to assure appropriate resources for the Center for Comparative Research.
  • Serve as a voting member of the IACUC and fully participate in functions of the committee.
  • Serve in an advisory role to university research scientists in areas of model development, technical training, and problem solving.
  • Provide direct supervision and oversight of veterinary technicians.
  • Assist in leadership of animal care program, including a strong working relationship with the center’s facility management.
  • Assist in training programs associated with the institution’s animal care and use program, including Center for Comparative Research training and IACUC training.
  • Rotate in after-hours, weekend, and holiday on-call services.
  • Assist the director in overall guidance and leadership of the department, including personnel and budgetary management, short- and long-term planning, and interactions with accrediting and regulatory bodies.
  • Perform other incidental duties as noted by the director and/or Institutional Official.
Strong communication skills, demonstrated leadership qualities, teaching and mentoring capabilities, problem solving skills, and engagement with a diverse scientific mission are essential skills required for the role. The assistant/associate director and the director will collaboratively provide strategic oversight to the institution’s animal care and use program, including a continual vision for growth, expansion, and development.
