Brandeis University is delighted to announce a career opportunity for an Assistant Director, English Language Programs. The Assistant Director takes on a key role in program development, implementation, and management for English Language Programs for the benefit of all undergraduate and graduate international students at Brandeis who utilize the services provided by ELP. This includes working closely with the Director and Associate Directors to develop and manage new programs and initiatives to increase international student success and retention at Brandeis and handling program administration and management to raise the quality of ELP initiatives, including diagnostics, curriculum development, tutorials, and recruitment. The Assistant Director handles program development and management, and uses surveys and other forms of data collection to help develop and pilot new programs to raise the efficiency and impact of ELP services for Brandeis students. The Assistant Director also provides important course/tutorial instruction for A& S undergraduate students and graduate students at GSAS and the Heller School. The Assistant Director works collaboratively with various departments and offices in the university to serve the needs of all language learners at Brandeis.

Job Description:

Program Development and Management

1) Take on key role in program development for all current and new ELP language and student success initiatives programs, including data collection, piloting and administration of these programs. Develop, assess, review, and modify all business practices related to all the programs run by ELP for undergraduates as well as graduates. Assist the Director in facilitating focus groups for international students in order to increase international student satisfaction and to increase retention rates. Organize and run ELP student events. Train, supervise, manage, and provide corrective action as needed to all student office assistants and all student workers (e.g. tutors, upperclassmen buddies, teaching assistants for ELP courses, etc.). Serve as first point of contact for all inquiries related to English language support services including faculty, staff, and students from the School of Arts and Sciences, the International Business School, and the Heller School for Social Policy. Produce minutes for ELP working groups that include student progress reports and policy decisions of each program. Analyze data and produce trends analyses as needed. (20%)

2) Independently manage the ELP Tutorial Program, which is a university-wide service for all A&S undergraduates and GSAS graduate students at Brandeis throughout the academic year. Oversee intake process for ELP tutors, monitor tutor reports, schedule training sessions, compile data on student use of tutorials, determine student eligibility for specific tutorials (i.e. academic oral skills, analytical writing, referrals from faculty and staff at Brandeis, etc.), and actively improve all tutorial procedures. Track student progress in tutorials and prepare reports for the Director and Associate Directors. Supervise and manage 20-30 tutors in the ELP Tutorial Program, ELP Office Assistants, and ELP Teaching Assistants. (20%)

3) Take primary responsibility over language diagnostics for the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, including proctoring diagnostic English assessment, grading papers, compiling data and writing reports, and overseeing the entire process that culminates in student selection for ELP/GSAS one-credit courses in Fall and in Spring under the purview of the Associate Director. Compile classroom rosters and keep records for management and supervision of course instructors and students, and write reports for faculty where needed (15%)

Course Instruction, Tutorials, and Consultancy Hours for A&S, GSAS, Heller.

4) Provide weekly one-on-one oral communications and pronunciation tutorials for up to 18 tutees per semester, or for up to 18 hours per week per semester. Tutees include A&S undergraduates, graduate students from GSAS, and graduate students from the Heller School. Hold academic oral skills consultancy hours and/or oral skills workshops for Heller graduate students for up to 12 hours per week. Meet with each tutee for an hour a week to provide specialized attention and systematic instruction to undergraduate and graduate students. Provide writing tutorials where necessary. Write reports on student progress. Provide oral skills workshops for GSAS graduate students where necessary. If necessary, teach one to two sections of ELP/GSAS courses where needed in the Fall and the Spring. (30%)

5) Technology, Software, and the Internet: Develop and maintain communications about program accomplishments and services including social media and website design and maintenance. (5%)

6) Fiscal Management: Independently monitor and troubleshoot operating budgets for English Language Programs. (5%)

7) Other duties as required. (5%)

Position Requirements:

  • M.A./M.S. required with TESOL certification.
  • 3-5 years of total work-related experience including 1-3 years of supervisory/management experience; 5-8 years of experience strongly preferred.
