Summary: Assists Director of Campus Life in implementing and coordinating the Residence Life program, including coordinating housing assignments, housing management, billing, fines, and damages reporting. Serves as Resident Director for up to two halls and provides oversight and/or management for additional halls on-campus. This is a full-time, twelve-month, live-in position. An apartment is provided in one of the residence halls. Pets are allowed with a signed pet agreement and deposit. This position is a Campus Security Authority (CSA) as defined by the Clery Act.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities include:


Housing Operations


  • Coordinate housing assignments, including room assignments, occupancy, housing management.
  • Assist with coordination of move-in day and move-in crew.
  • Oversee Summer Housing including hiring and training staff, room assignments, and managing maintenance requests.
  • Assist Director of Campus Life with billing, fines, and damage reporting, serving as a liaison between residence life and salient officers across campus, including but not limited to Business Officer, Physical Plant, and Event Services.
  • Coordinated Care Packages and Linen sales.
  • Assists the Director of Campus Life in implementing Residence Life programs, as assigned.
  • Oversee department housing software, data management and assist with department training and use of the software.
  • Other duties as required and/or assigned.


Resident Director


  • Assist with the selection, training, and supervision of student staff; provide staff with orientation to respective hall; provide staff development training programs; assist each student staff member in evaluating the necessary skills to do a thorough and competent job; keep student staff informed and updated on any information and/or revisions concerned with Residence Life and individual halls through weekly staff meetings.
  • Monitor the use and condition of all facilities in the residence hall including common areas and student rooms; supervise periodic room inspections and personally inspect the area's buildings at regular intervals to see that fire safety, maintenance and living standards are maintained; monitor damage assessment records.
  • Maintain accurate, up-to-date records relative to the residency of each student; maintain student emergency information; coordinate room changes and consolidation.


  • Interpret institutional policies and procedures to student staff and residents; act as a liaison and advocate between students, staff and the judicial board; responsible for seeing that appropriate policies pertaining to the residence halls within the area are implemented.
  • Supervise preparation of the residence halls for opening and closing at specified times throughout the year; monitor check-in and checkout procedures.
  • Maintain a high level of student contact and visibility; post office hours; provide assistance/referrals for residents with academic, career or personal concerns; serve as a liaison as appropriate; serve as a resource/referral of information concerning college life.
  • Promote and assist staff in developmental and social programming in the halls.
  • Serve in an on-call rotation as the primary emergency contact for the campus. Responsible for making decisions in emergency situations.
  • Work with conferences or summer school scheduled in the residence halls during the summer months.
  • Attend regularly scheduled staff meetings, as well as staff development and training sessions.
  • Assist in other duties as may be required in accomplishing the tasks assigned to Residence Life and Student Affairs.


This position is an essential employee for inclement weather events and will be required to report for duty in adverse weather conditions when the College is closed. The position also is required to report on time in situations when the College is on a delayed start, and is required to continue working when the College is released early.

  • Written evaluation completed by Assistant Director of Residence Life.
  • Degree to which responsibilities are accomplished.
  • Soundness of the residence hall environment and operations.
  • Effectiveness in the area of public relations and support of the Division of Student Affairs.
  • Attitude and morale of students and staff with whom the Residence Director works.


QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

Bachelors degree required. Master's degree preferred with a specialization in Higher Education, College Student Personnel or closely related field. Years of experience may apply toward consideration in lieu of masters degree. Residence Life/Housing experience required.


SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Directly supervises Resident Assistants. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.


LANGUAGE SKILLS

Demonstrated ability to read, analyze, and interpret policies and procedures; write reports, business correspondence, and procedural manuals; and, effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, students, and the general public.


MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Demonstrated ability to apply mathematical concepts to practical situations.


REASONING ABILTY

Demonstrated ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret instructions furnished in various forms.


COMPUTER SKILLS

Demonstrated computer skills and ability to learn new software programs.


OTHER SKILLS & ABILITIES

Demonstrated strong written and oral communication and organizational skills required, as well as skills in leadership development, supervision, crisis intervention and group dynamics; knowledge of student development theory and experience with staff development and training preferred.


CERTIFICATES, LICESNSES, REGISTRATIONS

Valid Tennessee Drivers license required., or ability to obtain within three months. Must pass MVR check.
