This position will serve as the Assistant Farm Coordinator for Cornell Cooperative Extension Association of Suffolk County and will support the administrative and operational coordination and management of the Suffolk County Farm and Education Center. Under the direction and oversight of the Farm Crops Manager/Farm Coordinator, this position is responsible for assisting with the daily operations of the Suffolk County Farm and its associated agricultural enterprises and assisting with planning, executing, and coordinating ongoing farm tasks, including, but not limited to facilities management, equipment repair; crop management; manure management; pest management and recordkeeping. This position will assist with agricultural facilities and land maintenance for production demonstrations, research, and education

Required Qualifications:
  • Associate degree plus experience relevant to the role of the position. High School diploma/GED plus 1-year transferable program/functional experience may substitute.

  • Knowledge of and experience utilizing agricultural and environmental management practices.

  • In-depth knowledge of modern agricultural practices for crop production.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain accurate crop production records.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage the forage and field crop operation successfully.
  • Demonstrated ability to utilize standard computer technologies.
Responsibilities/Essential Functions:

Administrative Responsibilities:

Direction – 10%
  • Assist in the development of short and long-range plans for the farm-production equipment including, but not limited to, determining the current use of equipment, developing a preventive maintenance schedule, and addressing any future need to replace existing equipment and purchase new, more efficient equipment and dispose of equipment deemed unstable and prepare specifications and bid package for prospective equipment purchases.
  • Participate in the planning and prioritization of Suffolk County Farm program efforts, including crops; seasonal extension horticulture, permaculture; farm safety, and 4-H youth and family-related programs.
Management – 15%
  • Participate as a member of the Farm Supervisory Team to manage facility use, construction/building repairs, equipment use/purchasing/repair, and other applicable items.
  • Ensure that the equipment is thoroughly cleaned and maintained.
  • Assist with managing crop production, including crop insurance.
  • Assist with monitoring manure management on the Farm to ensure that Suffolk County Farm meets applicable standards.
  • Assist with monitoring pest management initiatives to ensure that pest-related issues are resolved.
  • Assist with oversight of all work/projects, including resolution of issues and problem-solving for special agricultural projects in conjunction with educators, staff, and researchers.
  • Help to monitor workflow and adjust resources as needed.
  • Help research supplies and equipment required for the operation of the Suffolk County Farm.
  • Help manage the Association's farm-based safety plan, including machinery operations, hazardous and flammable material storage, sanitation programs, and general farm facility cleanliness.
  • Assist with directing and supervising repair and maintenance of all farm-related buildings, equipment, and tools to ensure that equipment is appropriately cleaned and maintained.
  • Management and supervision of Temporary Program Staff.
  • Monitoring and scheduling Temporary Program staff time to ensure program needs and goals are achieved
Coordination/Operation – 70%
  • Help maintain the agricultural facilities and land for production demonstrations, research, and education.
  • Help to maintain administrative records.
  • Help to complete required surveys and other field report documents as requested by the USDA or other public or private entities.
  • Assist with ordering supplies and equipment required for the operation of the Suffolk County Farm.
  • In conjunction with the Farm Coordinator, maintain an accurate inventory of farm machinery.
  • Maintain and outwardly demonstrate a positive attitude toward improved and economically viable farm production. Help develop the Farm's reputation by respecting and being courteous to farm visitors and cooperating with Farm Educators as they interact with the public in their programs.
  • Assist with the coordination of Farm complex-related activities with the Educator staff and support the training of new Educators by instructing them on the farm and field crop operations.
  • Responsible for maintenance of lawns, driveways, and parking lots, including lawn care and snow removal on the Suffolk County Farm and Education Center property.
  • Effectively maintain professional relationships with other agencies, organizations, and businesses that promote effective communication and facilitate continued programming efforts to include, but not limited to: Suffolk County government departments, Highway Department, Public Works, the Sheriff's Office, as well as the general public on the farm and in the community.
  • Identify the need and obtain quotes for prospective equipment purchases
Professional Improvement - 5%
  • Prepare for and actively participate in staff training and meetings.
  • Participate in staff evaluation processes as instructed.
  • Collaborate in activities that generally support Cornell Cooperative Extension and perform other duties as assigned.
  • Health and Safety - Applied to all duties and functions.
  • Support the Association to maintain a safe living and working environment.
  • Be familiar with and strive to follow applicable federal, state, and local regulations, Association health and safety policy/procedure/requirement, and standards.

Salary: $22.00 per hour
Hour: Full-time 40 hours per week
