Job Description

Idaho State University’s Department of Mechanical Engineering invites applications for a 9-month, full time, tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Energy Systems Engineering to start August 2023. The expectation for the successful applicant is to participate in developing and teaching both undergraduate and graduate courses in the area of energy systems engineering, as well as in the core undergraduate curriculum, to build a collaborative, externally funded research program and to perform professional service. Further, the applicant is expected to mentor graduate students and participate synergistically with the ME faculty in the activities of the Measurement and Control Engineering Research Center in the College of Science and Engineering (CoSE), and with other research groups both within CoSE and across campus.

The proximity of Idaho State University to the Department of Energy’s Idaho National Laboratory provides exciting opportunities for research and educational collaboration in a variety of areas of energy systems engineering. Along with INL and other Idaho Universities, ISU is a member of the Center for Advanced Energy Studies (CAES), a consortium dedicated to solving critical energy challenges.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Teaching undergraduate/graduate courses according to the ME workload policy with teaching responsibilities primarily based in Pocatello, covering our needs from the aforementioned emphasis area (there is an expectation of taking on other reasonable course assignments (3000 level and lower) from our core Mechanical Engineering curriculum; courses may be offered in person or via distance learning to the Idaho Falls CHE campus)
  • Development of and recruiting students into new undergraduate and graduate courses in the area of energy systems engineering
  • Pursuit of an active, collaborative, externally funded research program, including publication of research, participation at conferences, and supporting graduate students with GRA’s
  • Must be willing and capable of building synergistic interactions both within the department, and across campus
  • Mentoring graduate students
  • Advising undergraduate students
  • Serve as a possible mentor for projects in the ME senior capstone design course (ME 4496A, B)
  • Service on committees
  • The selected candidate must be able to obtain an Idaho Professional Engineering (P.E.) license within three years

Minimum Qualifications

  • An earned PhD in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field
  • A demonstrated record of research (publications and seeking external funding)


Preferred Qualifications

  • Expertise in the broadly defined field of energy systems engineering, including but not limited to: Energy conversion and generation (e.g., solar, wind, nuclear, etc.); Alternative, sustainable, and renewable energy systems; Energy storage technology; Energy systems reliability; Distributed energy generation systems; Energy conservation
  • Possessing a high potential for establishing research collaborations with one or more of the energy systems research groups at the Idaho National Laboratory
  • Ability to forge interdisciplinary connections with other departments across campus or within the community
  • Demonstrated success in teaching and working with students from diverse backgrounds
  • A background that enhances diversity of the Department’s faculty
  • Experience (at least one year) teaching Mechanical Engineering courses
