Duties: The Art Department at SUNY New Paltz seeks applications for an Assistant Professor of Art Education, a full-time, 10-month, tenure track position with an anticipated start date of August 20, 2023.

The Art Education program seeks an innovative artist/educator with extensive experience teaching children and youth in school and/or community settings. The ideal candidate will be prepared to enthusiastically collaborate with faculty and local school and community partners to develop forward-thinking initiatives within the art education program at both graduate and undergraduate levels. Candidates who can foster a welcoming and inclusive learning environment while modeling how to integrate creative practice into pedagogical approaches are especially encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities for tenure track faculty at SUNY New Paltz generally include a 3/3 teaching load, which may include the design and supervision of field placements and internships in schools and community organizations. The successful candidate will demonstrate empathy and generosity with students and colleagues in the Art Department. Art Education faculty collaborate on interdisciplinary initiatives, and opportunities for student engagement on campus and in the community. In addition to ongoing excellence in teaching, creative/scholarly research, and professional activity, the position entails service to the department, college and university including participation on departmental and college-wide committees and student advising/mentorship.

Qualifications: Required:
  • A Doctorate (PhD or EdD) is required at time of hire, however, exceptional ABD candidates with an established completion date will be considered.
  • The equivalent of at least three years of full-time teaching experience with children and youth. Well-versed in a wide range of contemporary approaches and critical issues in both art and art education.
Preferred:
  • The ideal candidate will have an active creative/scholarly practice.
  • A demonstrated commitment to integrating inclusive, equitable and sustainable practices into the curriculum.
  • A track record of successful collaboration.
  • College level teaching and/or student teacher supervisory experience.
  • We are particularly seeking candidates with expertise in disability studies and culturally responsive teaching to help guide and mentor our students.
