Reporting to the Vice President of University Marketing Communication (UMC), the Assistant Vice President of Communications directs the team responsible for internal, external, and executive communication strategies and initiatives, including proactive and reactive media relations that focus on brand reputation and enhancement. This position sits on the Executive Leadership team of University Marketing Communication and is the primary responsible party for all crisis communications and issues management. This position creates and supports implementation of strategic communication plans for the University including coordinated internal and executive communications planning and implementation and public relations program management. The executive in this position is responsible for creating and measuring yearly communication plans, calendars and resources, and inputs into budgets for various initiatives.
The AVP oversees a team that serves as communications counselors, media champions, and brand ambassadors to others at the University and is responsible for the professional development of the team. This group works closely with other UMC colleagues to create compelling narrative and messaging, maintain quality control of internal communications tools and deployment across the University, and ensure collaboration and cross-functional approach to plans and initiatives to achieve maximum impact and measurable outcomes.

News and Media Relations
  • As a member of the executive leadership team, the AVP will collaborate on and lead the University’s integrated, multi-channel efforts to ensure a unified institutional voice and compelling, results-oriented creative campaigns and collateral.
  • Leads the group responsible for all University reactive and proactive media relations in service of the University; clear focus on proactive and innovative storytelling and media relations.
  • Monitors all media coverage for schools and divisions, shares media reports (and regular dashboard), advocates for media coverage sharing in other areas (Enrollment Marketing, Advancement, etc.).
  • Collaborates with schools and divisions to develop public relations strategies that help raise awareness of the University and its various schools, centers, departments.
  • Ensures strategies align with overall University Marketing and Communication department’s strategic plan.
  • Actively collaborates with departments to leverage all news being announced across the University.
  • On point to manage the development and successful implementation of Campus Communicators; a program leveraging communicators across the University responsible for story mining, storytelling, promotion, and advocacy of strategic communications in service of the University’s overall goals and priorities.
  • Conducts media training on an as-needed basis (faculty experts and administrators).

Internal Communications and Engagement
  • Oversees all internal channels and approaches for distribution of impactful and effective communications including email, e-newsletters, digital screens, internal videos, townhalls, etc.
  • Advises on key messaging, senior leader stakeholder management, and internal issues management.
  • Consistently monitors and evolves communications, messaging/tone, channels and metrics.
  • Guides colleagues in the development of enterprise-wide tools and templates to enhance communication effectiveness

Reputation Management
  • Primary party responsible for all crisis communications plans to address or close gaps, identify vulnerabilities, and oversees annual case study review for senior management.
  • Advises on all issues and crises communications on behalf of the University, including strategy, messaging, distribution, and responding to media.
  • Serves on the Emergency Preparedness Committee as communications lead. Identifies vulnerable areas that will affect ability to communicate in a timely, accurate manner.

Minimum Education and/or Work Experience
Bachelor’s degree required, in communications or related field preferred, advanced degree preferred.
Significant background, 7 or more years direct and progressively responsible experience in Communications, Marketing and Public relations positions .

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree required, in Journalism, Communications or related field
  • Advanced degree in Business, Marketing or Communications preferred
  • Significant background, 8- 10 years, in Public or Media Relations, Marketing, or related communications experience
