Assistant Winemaker Job at Jean-Claude Boisset Wines
Position Summary: The Assistant Winemaker is an integral member of the winemaking team, completing or helping to oversee all aspects of wine production from viticulture practices, sourcing of fruit, coordinating quality control, maintaining lab practices, conducting fermentation, monitoring offsite crush facilities, barrel aging, blending and all other activities, either independently or under direction of the VP of Winemaking and Winemaker Boisset winemakers also work closely with the Sales & Marketing teams, Hospitality Staff, Trade, Media, and General Public as needed to maintain winery image. This includes interacting with the wholesale distributors on many levels, interacting with principals and staff from key trade accounts, and representing Boisset Collection at key trade and consumer events.
Essential Functions:
Under winemaker’s direction, coordinates and reviews winemaking operations in cellar and lab. Assist with inventory tracking, bottling line operation, record keeping, quality control procedures, and other mid-level tasks. Conduct consumer tours & tastings as needed.
Production Functions
Participating in winemaking quality control program, including monitoring the bottling line process; analyzing samples from fermentation tanks, barrels, and bottled wines; evaluating vintage aged wines, and other duties related to maintaining high quality standards.
Perform or oversee lab analyses on grapes, juice, and wine at various stages of production; supervising, delegating to, and working closely with enologist and winemakers
Conduct sensory evaluation of wines, for quality control, blending, and vintage analysis.
Perform essential winemaking functions during annual grape harvest: analysis of berry samples, analysis of delivered grapes and must; starting and monitoring fermentations, maintaining crush records, supervising pressing, filtering, pumpovers etc. as needed.
Complete research and development necessary to keep winery current and up to industry standards. May include attending annual trade shows, researching industry publications, maintaining contact with UC Davis programs, and other activities.
Monitor inventory of dry goods, case goods, bottling supplies, lab supplies, and other necessary materials as needed.
Monitor and record bulk wine inventory and movements, report inventory status to winemaker, accounting department, and parent company controller as needed.
Sales and Brand Ambassador Functions
Assist with public relations, trade functions, or employee tastings/training when scheduled.
Represent the Raymond brand at special events when scheduled.
Attend out-of-the-winery tastings/events as a Boisset Family Estates representative, as needed. Can sometimes involve out of area travel.
Communicate a comprehensive knowledge of Raymond wines, related background information, as well as knowledge of all Boisset brands, including the company’s vision and history.
Perform as winery representative with key retail and restaurant accounts. This can include hosting winery dinners and special events; attending consumer tastings; providing staff training and incentive programs; and other activities as needed.
Conduct regional direct sales activities for Raymond to include: completing sales call to targeted accounts, both independently and with distributor reps
Provide support and assistance to distributor reps in all activities: sales calls, winery incentive programs, trade and consumer events, and other activities as needed.
Additional Functions:
Comply with all company safety policies, practices, and procedures. Participate in safety training and report all unsafe conditions or work practices.
Participate in team efforts and perform additional duties as needed.
Necessary Skills:
Language: Ability to speak and understand basic English required for all positions.
Ability to read and interpret documents such as memos, instructions, policies and manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to present information effectively to groups of customers and/or employees and participate in one-on-one and small group situations.
Math:
Ability to perform advanced mathematical calculations, equations, data or scientific analysis, statistical theory, and/or other functions. Ability to understand and apply concepts of algebra, calculus, and geometry.
Logic:
Ability to apply common sense understanding to multiple tasks, analyze and solve practical problems, prioritize and delegate tasks and projects, work both independently and as part of a team, and adapt to frequent changes in the work environment.
Computer:
Possess intermediate computer skills which can include e-mail, internet, word processing, spreadsheet, basic database activity, graphic arts and/or publishing.
Education, Experience, Certificates, Licenses:
Bachelor’s Degree (B.A. or B.S.) from a 4-year college or university; or 12-24 months related experience or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Current, valid Driver’s License, insurable driving record, and proof of current automobile insurance required.
Physical Requirements:
Heavy physical activity performing regular strenuous activities, including standing, walking, climbing, reaching, carrying, pushing, pulling, squatting, and other motions. Stability and balance adequate for elevated and/or narrow work areas. Requires lifting and moving objects up to 50 lbs. in weight independently, and up to 100 lbs. or more with assistance. Manual dexterity sufficient to reach, grasp, hold, handle items, and work with the fingers, wrists, elbows, and shoulders. Clear vision (close and distant), peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to focus. Hearing adequate for working safety around machinery, vehicles, and other equipment.
Work Environment:
Indoor and outdoor environment with variable lighting, temperature and/or ventilation. Areas may or may not be heated, air-conditioned, or shaded. Outdoor periods frequently required in changing weather conditions. Exposure to fumes and/or a variety of chemicals. Moderate to high noise levels typical of machinery, power tools, vehicles, and other equipment. (Note: PPE provided for all workers.)
Schedule and Travel Requirements:
Variable schedule: primarily a set schedule but may require weekends, periodic evenings, and/or periodic or seasonal overtime.
Position may include overnight travel and/or travel by auto or air.
