GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The Wyoming Game and Fish Department seeks one (1) Wildlife/Habitat Technician. This position provides assistance to the Wildlife Division’s Terrestrial Habitat Program by helping monitor and evaluate habitat conditions in southeast Wyoming as well as assistance to the Lander Regional Office where they will work with full-time and seasonal employees in multiple divisions within the Wyoming Game and Fish Department's Lander Region and Statewide Sections (includes Fisheries, Wildlife, Law Enforcement, Aquatic and Terrestrial Habitat, Information and Education, Conservation and Hunter Education, Habitat and Access, and Non-Game Wildlife as well as Water for Wildlife Foundation, a non-profit organization focused on improving habitat for wildlife). ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function which may be performed at the job level.
  • Assist Regional Terrestrial Habitat Biologists with monitoring of terrestrial habitat conditions through vegetation monitoring in aspen, mixed shrub and riparian systems
  • Site identification and evaluation, planning, construction and monitoring of riparian restoration projects in ephemeral draws in sagebrush steppe habitats
  • Evaluation of riparian areas for potential release of beavers into unoccupied habitats.
  • Communicate effectively with landowners, sportsmen, and Department personnel.
  • Coordinate with Department personnel concerning public hunting and fishing opportunities.
  • Provide customer service to landowners, hunters, and anglers during hunting/fishing seasons.
  • Collect biological samples (CWD and brucellosis) from harvested big game animals
  • Interprets legal land descriptions and reading of maps/GPS delineating land ownership.
  • Assist in water development project folder/file management for over 400 water development projects that have been completed in Wyoming and throughout the West over the last 30 years.
  • Projects completed include guzzlers, windmills and solar-powered wells, spring developments, wetlands, riparian fencing, and off-site water developments.
  • Projects are currently in various states of functionality and usefulness to wildlife.
  • Coordination with federal land management agencies, private landowners, and non-profit conservation organizations on planned and completed projects is necessary.
  • Technician will be responsible for the development and maintenance of an extensive project database utilizing Excel spreadsheets.
  • Extensive communication with project representatives, sportsmen, and Water For Wildlife Foundation members via phone, email, and in-person.
  • In-field inspections of water development projects (status updates) within 150+/- miles of Lander, preparation of itemized lists of project repairs and cost estimates and light construction repair duties, creation of files database, and nomenclature system for files, photos, etc.

Qualifications


PREFERENCES/**AGENCY REQUIREMENTS:

Preference will be given to those with a bachelor’s degree in wildlife management, range management, biology, zoology, ichthyology or who are working towards a bachelor’s degree in wildlife management, range management, biology, zoology, or ichthyology.

**Agency requires that the successful applicant possess a valid driver’s license.

KNOWLEDGE:


  • Knowledge of wildlife management concepts, principles, and practices.
  • Knowledge and interpretation of legal land descriptions.
  • Knowledge of vegetation and sampling techniques
  • Self-starter, able to work independently with little direct supervision.
  • Well-developed communication skills (written and oral).
  • Knowledge of general outdoor skills.
  • Skill in the use of GPS and reading maps.
  • Knowledge of statutes and regulations related to hunting and fishing.
  • Ability to positively work with and facilitate relationships with the ranching and hunting communities and other interested individuals as a team.
  • Able to safely operate 4-wheel drive pickup and ATV in various terrain and road conditions.

PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:


  • Excellent physical condition and ability to work outside and perform under adverse weather conditions and difficult terrain often for long periods. Ability to work early mornings, late evenings, and weekends.
  • Will be required to work alone in the field in a rural setting.
  • Travel and overnight stays may be required.
  • Able to lift 50 lbs.

NOTES:
  • FLSA: Non-exempt
  • Successful applicants for employment must pass a background check prior to appointment.
  • Position will be based in the Laramie region from June through August (housing not provided) then transition to Lander for the month of September (camper is available).
  • Potential duration of employment June 1, 2023 – September 30, 2023; duration is flexible.
