Compensation


The estimated pay for this position is $17.2837 to $21.9026. The rates shown include a 6% premium pay (base= $-$ plus 6%). This reflects only a portion of the total compensation package for this position. Additional compensation may be available for this role through differentials, incentives, and bonuses. In addition, this position may be eligible for participation and company contributions into the Kern County Employees’ Retirement Plan.


Job Description

Under general supervision, performs janitorial services to maintain assigned buildings and surroundings in a clean and orderly condition; makes minor building repairs; and may oversee other Building Services and special program personnel.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

This is the journey level of the flexible classification series of Building Services Worker. Building Services Worker II's work independently in the performance of job duties, and may be required to oversee Building Services Personnel as well as work release, community service and/or other special program personnel. Normal work assignments may be performed in close proximity to county employees and customers including patients in an acute hospital, as well as around sensitive, specialized equipment and infectious conditions and hazardous waste. Work may be performed within various locations in a pre-designated geographical location and/or during evenings, nights and weekends. Incumbents may be promoted to the next higher level of Building Services Worker III after acquiring the required training and experience, upon the recommendation of the department head and approval of the Director of Personnel.

Essential Functions:

  • Interacts with the public, patients, visitors and other staff in accordance with customer service standards;
  • Completes tasks with an attitude of teamwork and cooperation in accordance with department procedures and standards;
  • Uses precautionary and protective measures to avoid self-exposure and cross-contamination;
  • Handles and disposes of contaminated trash according to established procedures;
  • Maintains and respects patient and customer confidentiality;
  • Cleans and maintains floors and stairways using various types of floor care equipment;
  • Empties and cleans trash receptacles; operates trash compactor;
  • Handles and disposes of contaminated trash according to established procedures;
  • Cleans and disinfects restroom fixtures and drinking fountains; refills restroom containers and dispensers;
  • Disinfects offices, workstations and public areas when an infectious condition has been reported;
  • Uses precautionary and protective measures to avoid self-exposure and cross-contamination;
  • Cleans, dusts and polishes furniture and woodwork; washes windows, walls and ceilings; and a variety of window coverings;
  • Assists in setting up, breaking down, moving, and arranging a variety of furniture and equipment;
  • Turns out lights; locks doors and windows, and replaces light bulbs;
  • Maintains and performs minor repairs on cleaning equipment;
  • Mixes cleaning chemicals and solutions;
  • Makes minor repairs and reports the need for more involved repairs;
  • Moves wheeled furniture racks;
  • Carries and erects folding ladders; climbs ladders;
  • Pushes a supply cart on wheels;
  • Adheres to standards imposed by regulatory agencies; performs normal work assignments in close proximity to patients, visitors and hospital staff, and to infectious conditions and hazardous waste;
  • Disinfects patient isolation rooms following discharge without knowledge of the specific diagnosis, which may include AIDS, tuberculosis, or hepatitis; changes contaminated linens and cleans unoccupied beds;
  • Cleans operating rooms and other special procedure areas to provide a sterile environment.

Employment Standards:

One (1) year as a Building Services Worker I in the Kern County classification system or equivalent, or eighteen (18) months of janitorial experience.

Possession of a valid Class C California Drivers License may be required depending upon assignment.

Candidates may be required to pass a thorough background investigation. Except for minor traffic violations, misdemeanor and felony convictions may be disqualifying.

  • Employees must maintain all health requirements designated by Kern Medical;
  • Depending on assignment incumbents may be required to possess and maintain specific certificates of competency as a condition of employment;
  • A background check may be required for this classification.

All Kern Medical employees are designated “Disaster Service Workers”. In the event of a disaster or civil disorder, all Kern Medical employees are to remain at work or to report to work in a safe and practicable manner.
