About the position:

The Buyer will be responsible for identifying, evaluating, and purchasing steel (principally plate) from new and existing suppliers for the company. The Buyer requires critical thinking, excellent negotiation skills, and strong face-to-face, telephone, and electronic communication skills. This position also requires the ability to learn price and cost structures, logistics, scrap metal, and other factors affecting pricing and trends. The Buyer will be responsible for managing and maintaining good relations with vendors, customers, and others.

Responsibilities:

  • Negotiate purchases of stock with qualified buyers
  • Be proficient in all aspects of the purchasing system
  • Develop and maintain strong supplier relationships
  • Uncover and develop new sources of supply
  • Monitor Company’s average cost and inventory by reviewing selected reports on a daily basis
  • Replenish inventory in a timely manner
  • Work on improving inventory turns in all purchasing decisions
  • Use 80/20 principle in long term purchasing decisions
  • Provide pertinent information and feedback to purchasing management staff about suppliers. Including staff changes, price announcements, changes in lead times and operational changes.
  • Other duties as assigned

Education and Experience:

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • 1-3 years purchasing experience, preferably in the metals industry or other related field

Knowledge/Skills/Competencies:

  • Proficient in MS Office (i.e. Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work well and excel while working with a team or individually

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $45,000.00 - $55,000.00 per year
