The Caroline and H. McCoy Jones Curator-in-Charge, Costume and Textile Arts oversees a permanent collection of over 13,000 textiles and costumes from traditions around the world. A wide range of techniques is represented, including loom-woven textiles; nonwoven fabrics, such as bark cloth, felt, and knitting; and objects embellished with beading and embroidery. Highlights from the collection include extraordinary Turkmen carpets, rare 12th century through 15th century Central Asian and North Indian silks, the most important group of Anatolian kilims outside Turkey, European tapestries, ecclesiastical textiles, and contemporary Bay Area fiber art. Since the 1930s, the collections have been known for 20th-century couture, particularly from the post-World War II era, with outstanding pieces by Cristóbal Balenciaga, Coco Chanel, Christian Dior, Madame Grés, and Yves Saint Laurent.
With holdings that span nearly three millennia and represent cultures from 125 countries, the textile arts collection enables the Museums to draw connections across cultures and enrich other areas of the permanent collection. The costume and textile arts collections are also represented in temporary exhibitions, featuring the diverse range of these materials, as well as important traveling exhibitions.
The Fine Arts Museums' costume and textiles collection is showcased through special exhibitions and rotations in the Lonna and Marshall Wais and Diana Dollar Knowles and Gorham B. Knowles costume and textile arts gallery, which is shared with exhibitions from other art departments. The Curator-in-Charge plans and directs the activities of the costume and textiles collection, and plans, assigns, and supervises the activities of curatorial staff in the department.
Typical Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Plans and supervises the installation of the Museums' Costume and Textile Arts collection. Identifies, classifies, and documents Costume and Textile works of art.
  • Conducts research in connection with identifying and publicizing objects in the collections. Makes recommendations for acquisitions and deaccessioning. Makes recommendations regarding the loan of the Museums' objects requested by other institutions.
  • Plans and organizes exhibitions. Makes cost estimates, corresponds with lenders, coordinates the installation of exhibitions with other staff, assembles data and photographs, prepares labels, and researches and writes catalogues and brochures.
  • Interprets the Museums' collections and exhibitions, and works with other museum departments to develop public programming and educational initiatives.
  • Consults with conservators and other staff members on the conservation of art objects.
  • Organizes and supervises the work of departmental staff.
  • Corresponds and confers with scholars, specialists, and the public. Works closely with collection support groups.
  • Cultivates donors and constituents for the Costume and Textile Arts collections.

Minimum Qualifications:
Education: MA (required) or PhD in Art History (or related field) from an accredited university.
Work Experience: At least 7 years of progressively responsible museum work experience in the field of Costume and Textile Arts, including 2 years of supervisory experience, OR an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Skills and Abilities:

  • Considerable knowledge of international art and art history. Specialized knowledge in the history of Costume and Textile Arts is required.
  • Ability to teach and instruct art and art appreciation.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to communicate with tact and courtesy with the public. Ability to deal with sensitive issues related to museum collections.
  • Experience in museum policies and procedures, including the proper methods of handling, storing, and processing a variety of art objects, and the general care of collections in a museum.
  • Knowledge of museum exhibition methods and practices, including the proper method of developing, planning, and implementing museum exhibitions.
  • Flexibility and strong follow-through on work assignments.
  • Reading knowledge of two or more European languages desirable. Preferably French, German, Italian, and/or Spanish.
  • Excellent research and organizational skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective and appropriate working relationships with staff, volunteers, the general public, individuals, and outside agencies, organizations, and groups.
  • Ability to achieve and sustain best curatorial practices.
  • Flexibility to work after hours and on weekends for special programs and events.
  • Ability to work simultaneously on multiple projects in a highly demanding and fast-paced work environment.
  • Ability to achieve cross-functional teamwork.

Benefits: This position includes a full benefits package, including medical, dental, vision, life and disability insurance, 401(k), and paid time off.
The estimated annual salary range for this position is $130,000-150,000. The final offer amount within this range will be based on experience and internal equity.
