About the MBC
The MBC has served as the steward for the historic Minneapolis City Hall and Hennepin
County Courthouse (also referred to as the Municipal Building) since 1904. The MBC was created by Minnesota Statutes as an independent board for the exclusive care of the building.

About the Position
The Municipal Building Commission is seeking a Carpenter Shop Journeyperson to perform skilled carpentry work in the remodeling, maintenance, and construction of Minneapolis City Hall/Hennepin County Courthouse and Adult Detention Center.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Initiate, plan, schedule, coordinate, and evaluate the construction, alteration, repair, and maintenance of the facility, including windows, window frames, partitions, doors, door frames, roofs, steps, furniture, etc.
  • Assist with facility’s physical key and core lock management system.
  • Performs work on the facility’s card access systems, motorized gates, etc.
  • In consultation with the Building Operations Supervisor and trade peers, complete preventative maintenance schedules for assigned equipment in Minneapolis City Hall/Hennepin County Courthouse.
  • Complete work with trades and others on joint projects.
  • Review work in progress and assure quality and adherence to expected standards and policies.
  • Work from sketches, blueprints, schematics, and drawings.
  • Screen new work requests, confirm work details, and determine appropriate action for work.
  • Assist with developing appropriate work plans by analyzing tasks, determining resources required, estimate cost of direct labor, materials, tools, equipment, and contract services.
  • Request and order supplies and materials for planned work and PM’s.
  • Maintain and adjust a regular inventory of supplies, materials and equipment used.
  • Ensures all work?related materials and labor are entered into the work management system Micromain Global

Required Qualifications

Minimum Education
High school diploma or equivalent

Minimum Experience


  • Successful completion of a 7,000?hour apprenticeship program approved by the State Division of Apprenticeship Training or a comparable apprenticeship program.
  • At least five years’ experience as a Journeyman Level Carpenter.
  • OSHA 10 certification or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire.
  • First Aid/CPR certification or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire.
Selection Process
The examination/selection process for this position may consist of a rating of training and experience, and a verbal or written exam. Since the examination selection process may consist of a rating of training and experience, it is to your advantage to be as complete and thorough on your application form and other support documentation/materials as is possible.

Background Check
Minneapolis Police Department and Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office background checks are required for this position. Employees must achieve and maintain the background checks.

Medical Exam
After a conditional job offer, candidates will be required to pass a medical examination which includes a physical screening. A drug and alcohol test are part of the medical examination

Union Representation
This position is represented by a collective bargaining agreement between the MBC and the Minneapolis Building and Construction Trades Council, AFL?CIO.

Working Conditions
Exposure to hazardous materials, chemicals, fumes, dust, dirt, noise and outside elements.

Probationary Period
This position will be required to serve a six (6) month probationary period.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • Methods, practices, and tools of the trade.
  • Modern building and carpentry methods, materials, tools, equipment, supplies, and techniques.
  • Facility electronic access systems, automated doors, and gates.
  • Occupational hazards and safety precautions of the work.

Skilled in:
  • Verbal and written communication, organizational, and conflict resolution.
  • Computer work including work management systems, key control systems, Microsoft outlook, excel and Word.
Ability to:
  • Read and work from blueprints, schematics, and related forms.
  • Make decisions and use independent judgment.
  • Maintain records and prepare reports.
  • Meet physical requirements of the trade.
  • Training and knowledge on installing key cores, combination, and use of Best Locks computer programs.
