JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Title: CDL Driver – A

Department: Truck Operations

Reporting to: Terminal Manager

Status: Non-Exempt, Hourly

This job description provides a general guideline to the most common duties, responsibilities, and minimum requirements for this position. It is not all inclusive and the actual position and working hours may vary according to the needs of the business or as circumstances indicate. Basic Function: A Driver ensures the proper safety and operating procedures as outlined by Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations and Crystal Companies policies. The employee checks equipment prior to departure and reports any mechanical problems to supervisors. He/she picks up and delivers all freight in the most efficient and safe means possible, ensuring that orders are always complete. Drivers adjust, block and brace freight as needed to prevent damage, and maintain manifests and logs (if required by DOT regulations) showing a recap of work days schedule, along with any pertinent information obtained during the trip. A Driver always ensures cleanliness of any Company vehicle he/she operates.

Principle Duties:

  • Assists as a team to accomplish Company goals.
  • Checks equipment prior to departure (circle check of vehicle), including all fluids.
  • Completes Vehicle Inspection Report (VIR) and maintains Driver copies.
  • Reports any mechanical problems to supervisor with the possibility of repairs prior to being dispatched.
  • When taking a pre-loaded unit, always checks to see that:
  • Always double checks the trailer number on the trailer with the trailer number on the manifest.
  • All freight is on vehicle and in proper order.
  • Freight is properly blocked and braced.
  • Equipment is properly placarded to communicate the Haz-Mat risk the public.
  • Errors are corrected prior to departure.
  • Delivers and/or Picks Up freight in the most efficient manner.
  • When delivering freight a clear signature and printed name of the receiver is required on the delivery receipt.
  • Always count freight when delivering and/or picking up freight. Scrutinize the accuracy of shipping papers and the corresponding labels on the freight. (I.E. Customer names, Pro/Tracking Numbers and Reference Numbers.)
  • When picking up freight Pro stickers (Tracking Numbers) are to be placed distinctly on freight and the corresponding bills of lading. Freight is also needs to be labeled with markers.

  • Unloads and/or loads unit when required, continually restacking freight from deliveries/pick-ups so that the freight is always protected from being damaged.
  • Maintains a manifest (electronic and/or manual) showing a recap of each day’s work, such as:
  • Miles driven by state.
  • Arrival times and departure times at both deliveries and pick-ups.
  • All pertinent information on shipments picked up.
  • Useful information for anyone doing the unloading and/or supervisors.
  • Sweeps unit clean when empty of freight.
  • Hazardous Material Freight must be:
  • Properly described on BOLs.
  • Freight must have affixed Haz Mat label/stickers reflecting contents.
  • Blocked and braced.
  • Truck properly placarded.
  • Placards adjusted/removed when there is no hazardous material on unit.
  • Properly completes Driver’s Logs all data fields need to be filled in and turned into Dispatch.
  • Performs post circle check upon return to the terminal.
  • Adds any additional information to the inspection report (white and yellow to Dispatch).
  • Chocks equipment when dropped against a platform.
  • Communicates with Dispatch on a regular basis as determined by supervisor.
  • Interior of trucks must be kept clean as well as trailers swept when empty.
  • Essential use of the Following Tools:**
  • Two Wheeler. (Truck to trailer drivers mostly)
  • Electric Jack. (Truck to trailer drivers mostly)
  • Forklift. (Truck to trailer drivers mostly)
  • Hydraulic lift gate. (Truck to trailer drivers mostly)
  • Computer tablet or notebook. (Truck to trailer drivers mostly)
  • Blocking/Bracing Tools (i.e., straps, load bars, wood). (Truck to trailer)

  • Essential Education/Skills:
  • Current and valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
  • Hazardous Material Training and Certification.
  • Haz Mat and tanker endorsements.
  • Customer Service skills.
  • Proficient written and oral communication skills.
  • Indirect Air Carrier Training (IAC).
  • Electric Jack Training.
  • Forklift Training.
  • Computer Tablet Training.

  • Essential Mental Requirements:
  • Must be able to work as an integral part of the Trucking Operations Team.
  • Must be able to maintain a good rapport with the Trucking Operations Team.
  • Must be able to cope within a fast-paced work environment.
  • Must be able to multi-task and work under pressure.
  • Must be able to understand the importance of the position to the success of the business.
  • Must possess a strong sense of urgency to move operations forward, balance with good instincts, strong attention to detail and excellent communication skills.
  • Required Physical Requirements:

  • Pass a Pre-employment DOT Physical and every two years thereafter.
  • Pass a Pre-employment Drug Screening and randomly thereafter.
  • Able to lift 60 lbs. and able to get in/out of vehicle multiple times throughout the workday.
  • Able climb stairs and load/unload, continually blocking and bracing freight.
