The Chemist I shall execute development assignments, determinations, and tests under the supervision of the manager or in assistance of the Electrochemist. The Chemist will contribute to the development or improvement of products in support of SIFCO ASC and Quaker Houghton strategic plan, particularly with regards to the Sustainability initiative.

Essential Job Functions

  • Technical Skills: requires a general understanding of electrochemistry and associated raw materials. Recognizes technical issues, applies basic understanding of brush plating chemistry working within team to analyze project results and define recommendations moving forward. Contributes ideas for or internal and external problem solving.

  • Application Knowledge: Performs brush plating trials to evaluate deposit characteristics. Gain a deeper understanding of the brush plating process and how to apply it to various customer applications. Support the development of new plating solutions and chemical processes to meet industry needs.

  • Communication Skills: (oral and written) communicate technical information/project results to departmental colleagues other department group managers. Keep detailed records of all projects, results, and analysis; write detailed laboratory reports with analysis and conclusions and supporting data for internal and external review. Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint and uses these tools to clearly communicate ideas and data.

  • Techniques: Perform traditional analytical chemistry techniques such as pH, titrations, specific gravity, UV-Vis, metallographic preparation for imaging on optical microscope. Familiarity with XRF, SEM, FTIR, and XRD is a plus. Promote and increase knowledge of chemistry and analyzing techniques to keep up the level of the progress in this discipline.

  • Support multiple projects as a contributing member through technical problem solving, analysis, and control methods. Drive standardization and improvement of existing products.

  • Support and drive process, productivity, and quality improvements through measurement and detailed analysis, and sustain improvements with process control methods, such as SPC and DOE.

  • Ability to conduct hands-on original research under direction, leading to product and process improvements and root cause analysis.

  • Approach technical projects in a professional manner that contributes to a climate of excellence based on observable personal action and self-discipline that encourages others to perform their duties thoughtfully and well.

  • Works in an injury-free safe manner and identifies near miss opportunities for improvement. Works within EH&S compliance for products and processes and completes all necessary training. Maintains safe and clean working area. Learns and maintains lab equipment.

  • May present papers at key industry gatherings.

Education, Training and Experience

  • Bachelor or advanced Degree in chemistry, electrochemistry, or chemical engineering

  • Fundamental knowledge of electrochemical process and solutions chemistry.

  • Excellent written/oral communication skills.

  • Active membership in and participation in professional organizational memberships ideal.

Other Skills/Abilities

  • To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Word Processing software; Spreadsheet software, Internet software and Database software.

Work Environment

  • Work in a laboratory and administrative office setting.

Physical Requirements

  • Moderate lifting up to 50 lbs. required occasionally.

  • Work involves exposure to hazardous chemicals and applicable PPE.
