JOB SUMMARY

The Vice President of Development/Chief Development Officer role provides strategic leadership of and direction for the broad-based and far-reaching development effort. Reporting directly to the President, Salem Hospital, the Vice President/CDO is responsible for the vision, strategy, leadership, and implementation of all philanthropic programs for the institution. They are driven and motivated by, and responsible for integrating the strategic priorities and needs of the institution, the philanthropic potential, and the engagement of key stakeholders who can inspire and leverage this potential. The Vice President/CDO carries a portfolio of highly rated prospects, and is accountable for overall philanthropic revenue, for creating a culture of philanthropy, and for ensuring that the talent, systems, and practices are in place to support a high performing fundraising program.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILIITIES

Provide a vision that inspires donors, doctors, and staff which advances Salem Hospital’s philanthropic mission.

Responsible for building comprehensive fundraising programs for Salem Hospital by identifying market opportunities and developing programs that are entrepreneurial and strategic to attract new constituencies to the hospital while building/stewarding the donor base to feed into major gift and planned giving opportunities.

Develop strong working relationship with the Board members and other key volunteers for Salem Hospital and provide mentorship and advice to staff on volunteer management.

Represent Salem Hospital in the community to strengthen community relations, engage stakeholders, and serve as an ambassador for the hospital.

Collaborate with senior hospital leadership to identify and target key communication and marketing objectives and work closely with staff to implement appropriate advertising, media, and communications.

Manage, inspire, and motivate team members; challenge staff to learn, grow, and draw upon their potential and talent.

Evaluate business need for the creation of frontline fundraising programs such as Annual Giving, Special Events, Foundation Relations, etc., and expand on or manage programs based on effectiveness

Serve as a member of the senior management team, supporting the goals of patient-centered care and operational effectiveness.

Manage a portfolio of major and principal gift prospects.

Build relationships with the medical staff and expand grateful patient programming.

Represent Salem Hospital on the CDO Council of Mass General Brigham and collaborate with the Mass General Brigham Enterprise Development Office to ensure system continuity.


Ideal candidates will demonstrate the following knowledge, skills and experience:

10-15 years of frontline fundraising and management experience in a community hospital or similar institution.

Demonstrated ability to cultivate, solicit and close six and seven figure gifts.

Success collaborating with senior management, board leadership, and volunteers to advance a high-level philanthropy program.

Track record of strategically and creatively building programs, pipelines, and volunteer networks to serve the interests of the organization while raising vital funds to support the mission. Appreciation and sensitivity to the importance of the physician/patient relationship in the philanthropic process.

Evidence of talent to recruit, motivate, and retain fundraising staff in a fast-paced, accountable, professional environment.

Commitment to work with and motivate a diverse range of people and uphold Salem Hospital’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion goals.

Ability to address human resource, legal, financial, and administrative issues in an innovative, effective, and responsible way.

Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills to effectively and appropriately represent the organization to potential donors, provide meaningful information that will encourage contributions, and represent the hospital’s best interests.

Passion for community health and dedication to provide comprehensive care to underserved and behavioral health populations

Experience in CRM management and ability to track and manage Team’s success through fundraising database
