REPORTS TO: Administration
NATURE OF WORK: Children's/Women Advocate/ Direct Support Professional (DSP) instructional level full-time nonexempt position responsible for providing direct care services to individuals of varying ages, diagnoses, and needs, as well as CAG/CAI service and programs for continuous compliance and quality improvement. Schedule working hours are 7:45am to 3:45pm, Monday through Friday, with some occasional Saturday requirements for training and other educational purposes. Some tasks may require office time, others will take place in the community with the individuals and/or Administrative staff
EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
1. Must be at least 18 years of age or older
2. High School Diploma/equivalent and/or Two (2) years progressively responsible experience serving individuals in the target population group.
3. CPR/First Aid (Bi-annual requirement)
4. Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI).
5. Valid Georgia driver’s license or state issued identification
6. Basic Physical
7. TB Test (Every two years)
8. Must be able to clear a required FBI Criminal Background Check
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Implement plans of care; (i.e. Progress Notes, Outing Notes, Behavior Documents, etc.)
2. Understand the needs of individuals affected by cognitive impairments;
3. Assist individual with personal care and activities of daily living (ADLs) to include bathing, dressing, feeding, toiletry, and so on;
4. Assist individual with participation in recreation/leisure activities;
5. Complete necessary documentation;
6. Work as secondary on-sight staff if CPR or first aid needs occur in center or on outings;
7. Assist individual with other personal care tasks in accordance with individual’s needs;
8. Be available for emergency calls to assist in crisis intervention; and,
9. Perform other duties as assigned.

Self-Determination: Children's/Women Advocate/ Direct Support Professional (DSP) assist the people they serve in directing the course of everyone’s life by partnering with others to obtain support, honoring the individual’s right to assume risk in an informed manner, and recognizing that each person has potential for lifelong learning and growth.
9. Advocacy: Children's/Women Advocate/ Direct Support Professional (DSP) advocate with the people they support for justice, inclusion, and full community participation. Engagement Individuals must be provided with activities during the course of the day; (i.e. individuals should not be left to sit idle during the time when staff are writing notes. An attempt must be made to provide them with some form of stimulation) Lesson Plans should be implemented as written
Behavior Modification
a) Redirect individual(s) in a timely effective manner preventing escalation of behavior.
b) Recognize when an intervention should be called and respond appropriately until team arrives.
c) Provide intervention support when team member arrives.
Behavior Documentation
In the absence of an Intervention team member staff must complete the appropriate behavior documentation the day of the event and turn it in to the Supervisor.
Implementation of Goals
a) Depending upon the number times goals are to be run, Individual’s goals are to be completed during the first three days of the week; if the goals are 5 days a week then every day indicated.
b) Goals & percentage of completion are to be written in the appropriate column on a daily basis
Documentation Progress Notes
a) All progress notes are to be completed and turned into daily to Case Management
b) Progress Note feedback received from Case Management must be reviewed and corrected the same day it is received.
Documentation CAG / CAI
All CAG / CAI Outing Forms are to be completed and turned in no later than the following day at close of business.
Additional Responsibilities

  • Attend all team meetings for individuals. Take notes and ask any questions to obtain clarification for any behavior issues that have arisen.
  • Read and respond to any behavior plan that is currently in place for individuals and get specific training from behavior specialist.
  • Report to Administration and Behavior Specialist in charge for any concerns, issues, or clarification needed to support individuals in their current behavior plans.

  • Always maintain appropriate behavior (responsible, courteous, reliable, dependable, etc.) as an agent of the agency when in contact with individuals, families, the public and direct support staff and co-workers.

  • Discussions with the Administration of any questions or concerns about a particular program or behavior. Do not make any changes to the approved Behavior Support Program on your own.
  • Discussions about personal relationships, activities, hobbies, etc. will not be tolerated during working shifts. Violators will receive disciplinary actions up to and including termination.
  • Dress code is Business Casual, but the following items should be avoided: flip flops, open toed shoes, low cut shirts, tank tops, cut off shirts, suggestive, alcohol or drug.

TRAINING
First 60 days from date of hire it is the responsibility of Administration and the Activity Coordinator to insure the following training is complete.

  • Person centered values, principles and approaches;
  • A holistic approach for providing care, supports and services for the individual;
  • Medical, physical, behavioral and social needs and characteristics of the individuals served;
  • Human Rights and Responsibilities (*);
  • Promoting positive, appropriate and responsive relationships with persons served, their families and stakeholders;
  • The utilization of:
  • Communication Skills (*);
  • Behavioral Support and Crisis Intervention techniques that are nationally benchmarked techniques for safe utilization of emergency interventions of last resort (*); and
  • The Georgia Crisis Response System (GCRS) to access crisis services.
  • Ethnic, and Cultural Diversity Policies;
  • Fire safety (*);
  • Emergency and disaster plans and procedures (*);
  • Techniques of Standard Precautions to include:
  • Preventative measures to minimize risk of infectious disease transmission;
  • Use of Personal Protection Equipment (PPE);
  • Sharps Safety (with sharp containers disposed of according to state and local regulated medical waste rules);
  • Environmental Controls for cleaning and disinfecting work surfaces;
  • Skills Guides for handwashing, cleaning up spills, gloves use, and what to do with contaminated supplies;
  • Respiratory Hygiene/Cough Etiquettes for cough, congestion, runny nose or increase production of respiratory secretions; and
  • Approaches to individual education to include incident reporting and follow-up.
  • First aid and safety;
  • BCLS including both written and hands on competency training is required;
  • Specific individual medications and their side effects (*);
  • Suicide Prevention Skills Training (such as AIM, QPRP);
  • Ethics and Corporate Compliance training is evident.

A minimum of 16 hours of training must be completed annually to include the trainings noted below:

  • Human Rights and Responsibilities
  • Communication Skills
  • Behavioral Support and Crisis Intervention techniques to de-escalate challenging and unsafe behaviors (*)
  • Nationally benchmarked techniques for safe utilization of emergency interventions of last resort (if such techniques are permitted in the purview of the organization) and

  • Fire safety
  • Emergency and disaster plans and procedures
  • Specific individual medications and their side effects
  • Training provided on proper body mechanics for lifting/transferring/positioning as a basic requirement to assist in performing activities of daily living safely. In addition, prior to working with each individual, training on the individualized specific condition as written in each individual’s care plan protocol should be conducted, if applicable. (*)
  • Annual requirements include but are not limited to: Abuse and Neglect training, Blood Borne Pathogens, Confidentiality agreement, Tardive Dyskinesia, Seizure training and others on an as needed basis
  • Annual requirements include but are not limited to: CPR/First Aid & TB Test

CONFIDENTIALITY:

  • NEVER discuss the individuals or his/her program with anyone outside of the family or other team members that also work with the individuals.
  • Never discuss an employee’s performance or behavior to another employee. The performance of each employee on a team shall be held in the strictest of confidence with feedback provided in a professional and confidential manner upon approval of administration.
  • Issues concerning the individual and his/her family should be kept to self unless it concerns the individual’s welfare in which case, that incident should be reported immediately to the Administration. Alleged abuse and neglect situations must also be documented on a CIR (Critical Incident Report) and faxed into the appropriate state agency for review within 24 hours of discovery.
  • Salary and/or hourly pay rates are confidential and cannot be discussed amongst employees. Failure to abide this policy will result in immediate termination.
