General Description:

Provides Medical Nutrition Therapy to individuals and groups within the Chickasaw Nation Department of Health. The Clinical Dietitian - plans, develops, implements, and evaluates nutrition services and education.

Supervision Essential Job Functions:

  • Provides individualized Medical Nutrition Therapy and inspires behavior change to promote the treatment and prevention of health related conditions.
  • Conducts a nutritional assessment and interventions as needed in accordance with each patient's plan of care.
  • Serves as a nutrition resource. Collaborates with physicians and other medical staff to tailor nutrition services and improve patient outcomes and continuity of care.
  • Provides education to the Okchamali staff regarding the provision of regular and therapeutic diets, food safety, and nutrition-related compliance concerns through in-services.
  • Assess and identifies patients at risk for malnutrition and recommend interventions to improve the nutritional status of the patient.
  • Attends and is involved with interdisciplinary meetings.
  • Reviews dietary intake for factors that affect health conditions and nutritional risk.
  • Helps patients achieve health goals by analyzing their physical conditions and other health concerns and creating a nutrition plan that meets their individual needs and dietary preferences.
  • Evaluates patient knowledge, readiness to learn and potential for changing behavior.
  • Determines when a problem requires consultation with or referral to another provider and identifies resources as needed.
  • Formulates and determines a plan of action that is patient focused.
  • Assess education needs and provides nutrition counseling based on individual needs, including nutrient requirements, knowledge and abilities, and medical, economic and social situations.
  • Assists in the education of dietetic students and interns. Plans learning experiences, teaches and evaluates performance.
  • Demonstrates the proper use of patient’s protected health information
  • Assists in achieving compliance regulations.
  • Analyzes and makes recommendations for strategies and programs to improve the nutritional status of target populations.
  • Prepares and presents health fair educations, PSAs, radio interviews, and public speaking engagements in the community.
  • Collaborates with the health system staff, Chickasaw Nation groups, and health promotion events in the community.
  • Maintains appropriate documentation of services in the electronic health record and contacts with clients.
  • Attends selected national, state, and local meetings as necessary to stay abreast of trends and development in nutrition
  • Evaluates nutrition education materials provided to clients for accuracy and appropriateness. Selects, orders, and develops nutrition education materials as needed.
  • Maintains productivity standards and practices, effective time management, and prioritizing tasks.
  • Maintains dietetic registration, licensure, and continuing education requirements.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Preferred - Advanced level of knowledge of current scientific information regarding nutrition, diet, and health and the ability to communicate this information to professionals and the public Preferred - Knowledge of contemporary science in the area of emotion-based messaging and techniques for effecting behavior change Preferred - Communicate effectively in both written and verbal form along with being a critical thinker Preferred - Ability to listen to the patient and respond with compassion Preferred - Effectively work with all ethnic, gender, and income populations Preferred - Effectively collaborate with diverse groups of people (general public, health professionals, and other partnerships) Preferred - Effectively organize tasks and function independently Preferred - Experienced with computers and general knowledge of Microsoft office, email, zoom, and telehealth

Education:

Bachelors Required - Bachelor’s degree in dietetics, foods, and nutrition, or related area granted by a U.S. regionally accredited college or university. Masters Preferred - Master’s degree in human nutrition, dietetics, food and nutrition, community nutrition, public health nutrition, food systems management, or a related area may be substituted for the required experience.

Education Note:

Completion of a didactic program in dietetics and supervised practice program approved by the Commission on Accreditation of Dietetics Education of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

Training And Experience:

Preferred Experience (6 months - 3 years) - Minimum of 1-2 years of clinical nutrition experience Preferred Training (0 - 6 months) - Certificate of Training in Childhood and Adolescent Weight Management

Required - Registered Dietitian Required - Licensure as required by the state of Oklahoma
