UW Medicine in beautiful Seattle, Washington is actively interviewing for Clinical Laboratory Technicians; part-time, full-time, and temporary hourly opportunities for various work shifts and location.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
*may include, but not limited to*

  • Prepare patient and collection equipment according to established procedures for blood collection
  • Teach, train and share practical knowledge with other staff responsible for entering and managing entry of medical necessity, results, and/or manual billing
  • Responds promptly, courteously, and professionally to phone and written inquires from clients about test information, results, and other elation information
  • Solves specimen problems in a timely, through and accurate manner, providing appropriate documentation for supervisor review
  • Sort and prioritize initial specimens and requests, receive specimens via pneumatic tube system and at the front window
  • Result and review entries for all reference lab testing for HMC, UWMC and SCCA
  • Performs setup for bacterial susceptibility testing including disk diffusion, gradient strips and microtiter panels.
  • Works with leadership to review and update procedures, policies, and job aids
  • Match specimens against requisitions for appropriate tube type
  • Centrifuge and aliquot appropriate specimen type and quantity as ordered
  • Process timed urine collections: add preservatives, measure, aliquot, etc.
  • Answer telephones, intercom and window reception in a courteous and professional manner
  • Perform computer functions required for completion of tasks: data entry, printing, worksheets, reports, result inquiry
  • Respond to inquiries concerning patient lab values, reference ranges, specimen requirements, procedures, time required for tests and preparation of specimens to outside labs for analysis
  • Resolve specimen or order-related problems
  • Perform computer functions required for completion of tasks: data entry of patient information and tests requested, printing, worksheets, reports, result inquiry, etc.

REQUIREMENTS:
High school graduation or equivalent AND one year of chemical, clinical, or public health laboratory experience
OR
Completion of a laboratory assistant course approved by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists
OR
equivalent education/experience.

HARBORVIEW MEDICAL & UWMC SPECIMEN PROCESSING & REMOTE LAB DIVISION REQUIREMENTS:
  • Completion of a phlebotomy course
  • Medical Assistant - Phlebotomy (MA-P) certification with the WA State Department of Health
  • If the New Hires does not have an MA-P, they will be required to complete an inhouse training program. As a condition of employment, the MA-P must be obtained within 90 days of the start date.

DESIRED:
  • Associates or bachelor degree in science
  • Experience in a major medical hospital laboratory
  • Experience with laboratory information system
  • Experience with electronic health record (EHRs) information systems

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
  • Lab Medicine employees may be required to work in any of the department locations including but not limited to Harborview Medical Center, University of Washington Medical Center, UWMC-Roosevelt Clinics, Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, Seattle Children's Hospital, etc.
  • Lab Medicine employees are considered essential staff and as such will be required to report to work when scheduled despite inclement weather.

Newly hired employees will be required to provide proof of their COVID-19 vaccination.
