The main responsibility is to construct precision tools or metal forms, called dies, which are used to cut, shape, and form metal and other materials. Also, to analyze specifications, lay out metal stock, set up and operate machine tools, and fit and assemble parts to make and repair dies, cutting tools, jigs, fixtures, gauges, and machinists' hand tools.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSBILITES:

  • Set up and operate conventional or computer numerically controlled (CNC) machine tools such as lathes, drill presses, milling machines, grinders to cut, bore, grind or otherwise shape parts to prescribed dimensions and finishes.
  • Build or repair simple to complex semi-permanent, permanent and progressive dies.
  • Fit and assemble parts to build, repair, or modify dies, jigs, fixtures and gauges using machine tools and hand tools
  • Visualize and compute dimensions, sizes, shapes, and tolerances of assemblies based on part specifications
  • Verify dimensions, alignments and clearances of dies, fixtures and gages for conformance to specifications, using measuring instruments such as calipers, micrometers, height gages, dial indicators, etc.
  • Conduct test runs with completed tools or dies to ensure that parts meet specifications, adjusting as necessary.
  • Keep work area clean and free of safety hazards
  • Maintains records of tools and equipment issued and returned, using a computer.
  • Inspects and measures tools and equipment for defects and wear and reports damage or wear to supervisor.
  • Build tools to specifications.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must have organizational skills to keep accurate records of tool locations, schedule tool repairs and maintenance. Basic computer skills are necessary to transact tools and materials in the system and maintain inventory records.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

One to two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence and memos. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to supervisors and other employees of the organization.

MATHMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals.

REASONING ABILITIES:

Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
