WHAT WE CAN ACHIEVE TOGETHER


TNC’s Volgenau Virginia Coast Reserve team is looking for an intern to assist our science and conservation staff with program activities on Virginia’s Eastern Shore. The Coastal Conservation Tech position will assist the entire team with efforts around marine habitat restoration, stewardship for migratory birds, preserve management, and education and outreach. This position requires frequent boat rides and the ability to perform physically strenuous work in outdoor settings.
The Coastal Conservation Intern is a full-time, paid, 10-week internship working Wednesday through Sunday. This position is based in Nassawadox, Virginia. The internship will run from May-August 2023, shared housing accommodations are available. Main responsibilities include assisting with:
  • Marine habitat restoration activities including collecting eelgrass shoots, maintaining a seed curing facility, and oyster reef and scallop restoration efforts
  • Stewardship of beach nesting birds including patrolling beach nesting bird habitat, maintaining signage, and conducting visitor outreach and surveys at boat ramps
  • Preserve management and maintenance (trail maintenance, general facility upkeep)
  • Education and outreach events (nature camps/workshops and public events)

The Nature Conservancy’s Volgenau Virginia Coast Reserve (nature.org/vvcr) is one of the last expanses of coastal wilderness on the U.S. East Coast, encompassing over 40,000 acres of natural landscape throughout the Eastern Shore of Virginia. This position will be part of our Summer 2023 intern cohort and will receive an orientation, professional development resources, exposure to TNC lands and preserves, and real-world work experience to further academic and/or career goals. Intern term runs from May 30th – August 11th 2023.


WHAT YOU'LL BRING


  • Experience working in outdoor settings in variable and sometimes physically challenging conditions
  • High school diploma, or equivalent, and 6 months of related experience
  • Must have valid driver’s license, safe driving record (per TNC Auto Safety Program) and provide own transportation and personal automobile insurance
  • Must meet all TNC Youth Qualification requirements and background check

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS


  • Must be willing to obtain related licenses or certifications as required (e.g., First Aid, CPR)
  • Demonstrated connection with Northampton and/or Accomack Counties on the Eastern Shore of Virginia
  • Ability to follow instructions from colleagues
  • Ability to work in a team environment
  • Comfortable working on a boat
  • Student interested in pursuing a career in conservation preferred

Employment in this position will be contingent upon completion of a Vehicle Use Agreement, which may include a review of the prospective employee's motor vehicle record.

SALARY INFORMATION


Current funding provides for $16.50 per hour. Some benefits, assistance with housing available. Position primarily based on a Wednesday through Sunday schedule.
