Job Duties:

The City of Virginia Beach is recruiting for a Plumbing Code Inspector to join the Permits & Inspections division of the Planning & Community Development Department. This posting may be filled as a Code Inspector I or Code Inspector II depending on the qualifications of the selected applicant. The associated pay grades are as follows:

Code Inspector I G.19: $41,089.00 - $63,688.00

Code Inspector II G.21: $45,301.00 - $70,216.00

Duties of this position include, but not limited to:

  • Inspection of new residential and commercial building plumbing installation, including repairs, alterations, additions, and /or renovations in compliance with the Virginia Plumbing Codes.
  • Review of Plumbing plans for code compliance.
  • Investigate Plumbing related complaints.
  • Answer Plumbing code questions for contractors, homeowners, and citizens by phone, email and/or in person.
  • Enter inspection results on laptop computer through Accela automated permitting system.
  • Issue Stop Work Orders and Notices of code violations.
  • Issue summonses.
  • Appear in court to provide expert testimony in cases involving the applicable State and City code
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Additional duties of a Plumbing Code Inspector II include:

  • Must possess a valid Virginia State Plumbing Master License, Virginia State (DHCD) Residential Plumbing and Commercial Plumbing Inspector Certification.

Minimum Requirements:

Code Inspector I Minimum Requirements:: High school or GED plus four (4) years experience in a plumbing related field providing the required knowledge, skills and abilities and associated with such positions as building inspector, plumbing contractor, or mechanical contractor; or any equivalent combination of experience and training providing the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Must have a valid drivers license. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Must possess a State Master Plumbers Certificate, or obtain one within one year of employment with the City Must obtain ICC Residential Plumbing Certification and ICC Commercial Plumbing Certification within 18 months of employment. All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. Must be available to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and overtime when required to meet operational needs. This position may require incumbents to wear and maintain appropriate personal protective equipment such as, but not limited to, steel toed shoes, hard hats, safety glasses, gloves, or other safety attire and equipment in designated areas of risk. Code Inspector II Minimum Requirements:
High school or GED plus five (5) years experience in a field related to plumbing construction which utilizes the required knowledge, skills, and abilities and in positions such as heating and air conditioning technician; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Must possess a valid State Master Plumbing Certificate.
Must have, or obtain, a current and valid driver’s license.

Preferences:

Experience in Plumbing installation, Plumbing code compliance, and working for a municipality. Possess Virginia State Plumbing Masters license, Residential & Commercial Plumbing Certification, or a diversity of ICC/DHCD Certifications. Strong customer service and communication skills. Team-player who can also work independently.
