JOB TITLE: Collection Specialist

REPORTS TO: Billing and Collection Supervisor

EFFECTIVE DATE: 1/27/2023

SUMMARY: Responsible for ensuring company receives all necessary payments from debtors. Duties include monitoring accounts payable statements to identify debts owed to their company, contacting customers or business partners to notify them of overdue payments and documenting debts collected.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responsible for collecting, posting and managing account payments.
  • Submits claims and following up with insurance companies.
  • Answers questions from patients, clerical staff and insurance companies.
  • Identifies and resolves patient billing complaints.
  • Reviews accounts for possible assignment and makes recommendations to the Billing and Collection Supervisor, also prepares information for the collection agency.
  • Performs various collection actions including contacting patients by phone, correcting and resubmitting claims to third party payers.
  • Submits price adjustment requests.
  • Follows up on all claims, adjustment requests and appeals.
  • Participates in educational activities and attends monthly staff meetings.
  • Conducts self in accordance with employee handbook.
  • Maintains strictest confidentiality; adheres to all company guidelines and regulations.
  • Appeals MVA, Workers Comp and medical office visits.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by management.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • No prior experience or training.
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED), or one to three months related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Other skills required:
  • Knowledge of medical billing/collection practices.
  • Knowledge of computer programs.
  • Knowledge of business office procedures.
  • Knowledge of basic medical coding and third-party operating procedures and practices.
  • Ability to operate a computer and basic office equipment.
  • Ability to operate a multi-line telephone system.
  • Skill in answering a telephone in a pleasant and helpful manner.
  • Ability to read, understand and follow oral written instructions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationship with patients, employees and the public.
  • Must be well organized and detail-oriented.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Requires sitting and standing associated with a normal office environment. Manual dexterity needed for using a calculator and computer keyboard.
