College Admissions Coach Job at Ivy Scholars College Consulting

College Admissions Writing Coach - Ivy Scholars Education

Overview

What do ball-throwing robots, long-shot political campaigns, cutting-edge cancer research, and Salvador Dali-inspired dance pieces all have in common?

They’re all topics found in past Ivy Scholars students’ college applications!

As a college admissions coach, you will be tasked with helping Ivy Scholars students maximize their chances of college admissions. This will be done by working with students to develop an optimized application strategy and a compelling personal narrative. Whether our students are applying to nearby state schools or far-off Ivy League institutions, our goal remains the same: to help them showcase their unique abilities and personal values by telling their stories in a way that grabs admission officers’ attention.

In college admissions, the audience is king. Thus, the ideal coach is not only comfortable collaborating with high schoolers but also capable of helping them strategically weave the raw material of their life experiences into writing that immediately appeals to overworked, under-resourced admissions officers. From concept to final draft, you will guide our students through a dynamic brainstorming, writing, and editing process that is as much about personal self-discovery as it is about economical prose and creative problem-solving.

This is more than just a side hustle. Tasked with maneuvering the often cryptic hearts and minds of university applicants, our most successful coaches are part journalist, part detective, and part best friend. As a coach, the narratives and copy that you craft will directly impact your students’ admissions chances as much as it does their lives for the better.

Responsibilities

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Working directly with students to craft compelling college essays, particularly the Common App personal statement and college-specific supplemental essays.
  • Editing and revising college essays on the backend.
  • Communicating directly with clients and updating them via email on the status of their child’s application progress.
  • Communicating and collaborating with Ivy Scholars management.
  • Assisting in crafting a student’s application strategy and timeline.
  • Helping students understand and develop their intellectual and interpersonal strengths.
  • Setting up internships, nonprofit projects, and academic research opportunities through outreach and networking with other organizations.
  • Coordinating profile projects lasting between 3-18 months with students to boost their college candidacy.
  • Additional duties as requested.

Knowledge

Ideal candidates are knowledgeable about writing composition, editing, and prose styling. They are also knowledgeable about the college admissions process, including institution-specific programs and schools, such as Brown's PLME. Ideal candidates also have experience, whether first or second hand, of Ivy+ institutions. Experience with Asana, Google Suite, and Acuity is a plus, although not required.

Skills

The ideal candidate will:

  • Be a vivid and captivating storyteller.
  • Understand the principles of candidate strategy and be capable of applying a strategic mindset to college admissions.
  • Be a clear communicator.
  • Have an astute sense of social and emotional intelligence.
  • Be detail-oriented.
  • Be hardworking and willing to work through critical high-volume periods, specifically during September-December.
  • Be comfortable with taking feedback on written work and capable of incorporating comments into future drafts.
  • Be comfortable communicating directly with parents to provide updates and resolve issues.

Traits

First and foremost, you need to find joy in crafting compelling stories and shepherding students through the college admissions process. This is your opportunity to impact students’ lives by showcasing their unique experiences in the most effective possible way. Simultaneously, you’ll also be able to hone your craft as a storyteller. You should have a good degree of social and emotional intelligence. After all, you will have to build a friendly rapport while maintaining a professional hue since you're working with teenagers. It will also be necessary to ask the right questions to get to the heart of the story.

You should also be comfortable communicating directly with parents without management present.

Compensation

You will be compensated at a rate of $45 per hour as a 1099 contractor. You may receive bonuses on a case-by-case basis. We expect our coach to work 15 to 25 hours a week throughout the year, and 35-50 hours per week from October through December during the admissions season.

Long Term Growth

Ivy Scholars strives to create synergistic, long-term relationships with both our clients and our coaches. We recognize the value of subject matter expertise, institutional knowledge, and experience in education. Successful coaches may be promoted to full time contractors or employees after a period of time and admirable performance.

Defining Success

Your success will be measured in a couple of different ways. We strive to be as transparent as possible, so we want you to know how you'll be graded as an Ivy Scholars coach. First, are you able to craft concise, compelling stories in a timely manner? Next, are you able to leverage strategic knowledge, operational efficiency, and attentiveness to leave parents and students enthusiastic about your performance? Lastly, are you a professional, dependable, and dedicated member of the Ivy Scholars team?

Logistics

This role is completely remote. You will meet with students via Zoom and compose essays on Ivy Scholars' internal system. You will report to company management on a weekly basis.

Timeline

Candidates can expect to hear back from us within two weeks after their initial submission.

A Note on Cover Letters

We highly recommend that prospective candidates submit a cover letter with their application. Candidates without cover letters are rarely contacted for an interview. In fact, all candidates we've hired from Indeed have submitted cover letters with their initial application. We encourage you to do the same in order to maximize your chances of success.

Thanks for applying to become a part of the Ivy Scholars team! We look forward to reviewing your application.
